Update: I gave my son his sgian today. He loved it! We'll be making some modifications to make it more comfortable for him. Specifically, we'll be polishing the handle to get all the natural bumps off.
Here it is, as it sits today.

Another source of antler bits is pet supply stores. They sell them for dogs to chew. I've picked up some dandy pieces for a lot less than you see them for in the knife supply catalogs.
