Congrats! I found that as I developed my personal style, my confidence increased. The only thought I give to going out kilted is whether I am wearing the kilt well. I just accept that the kilt will make an impression on people who see it and I want that impression to be a good one.

    Above all, wear it confidently.

Gun people as a whole are generally hard to get a rise out of ("an armed society is a polite society"). Mostly they are there to maintain their skillset and on occasion check out the neat weapons that other people brought/are firing. Unless you violate the rules of gun handling or ignore directions from the RSO. Then you are a designated TRP.

I was in the grocery store last week (in tshirt, Sport Kilt (US Army tartan) and flip flops) and an older woman first asked "are you in a parade?" After I said no she said she loved the kilt and wished more people would wear them..

I went grocery shopping in my kilt (with sporran and hose w/flashes). One woman made a comment while I was grabbing a cart that she doesn't see a lot of kilts other than what her neighbor occasionally wears. Another woman approached me and asked if I was Scottish, to which I said that my family name is Hamilton, and she said hers was Stewart. It was a very cool experience!!

I think it's great to wear kilts as often as the option presents itself. Way to go on breaking the seal of your kilt wearing to the public!!! The picture is of me in the middle and a couple of lads heading out to hand out clothes and food to the homeless, but we like to go out in 10 degree weather in our kilts and do it! lol.

"Are you in a parade", made me snort. Thinking it through, you were parading about in your kilt.

Clarified: You don't have to be flamboyant to wear a kilt, something in the way a kilt makes one feel, tends to improve one's posture and ambience. Hence the "parading" comment from a non-kilted view point.

You had better get used to the attention - In the last couple of years I haven't had a single negative interaction - Women in particular seem to be very attracted to kilts, and in my case it must be the kilt because I'm 67, virtually bald and, as mentioned elsewhere, a geek!

In Lisbon (where it would appear that no-one has ever seen a kilt before) the street performers were asking me if they could have their photo taken with me, and a guy with a long focus lens was desperately trying to get a discreet picture until I turned around and waved to him - He recovered well, and I think he got a good shot. Funniest of all was the young Chinese couple at the top of the funicular railway. They had a hurried discussion and it was the girl who bravely came up to ask if they could have their picture taken with me.

Beware - You might just get hooked on kilts...

Congratulations! I think it is very positive that obviously more and more men will eventually take the plunge to wear a kilt in public. And that they realize that it is not the big deal.

When I, almost 20 years ago for the very first time took a kilt out in public, I was about horrified what people should think, and say. And of course I did it far from home, not even in my own country, it was.

Out of my shelter, my car, when I thought nobody would see me leave it, then a few minutes down the street, and back to my car. Nothing happened. Did no one see me, or did they just not notice?

Then my ventures out got longer, and more frequent, and got closer and closer to my home. For years now I have worn my kilt in my own surroundings, and my wife is often following me on my walking in the neighborhood.

Nobody seems to take me for a Scotsman, or for being Scottish, which is most positive, I think. I might just be regarded what I intend to, a man wearing a kilt.
No negative remarks or gestures, not even when walking through more dubious town districts, but many positive comments, like yesterday when a lady told me, I looked really handsome in my kilt.

Therefore to anyone, having not yet dared out: Do it. Do it now. Your only problem might be that you for the rest of your life shall probably regret that you didn’t wear that kilt out years before.

    Are you in a parade?

I find it amazing that people will frequently ask if I am in a parade, even when I am very casually dressed, e.g. sandals, no belt, polo shirt, etc. The kilt must completely dazzle them!
