www.folkwear.com has a pattern for an Australian Drovers coat, pattern number 137

That's the problem: they have too many patterns. Plus, they almost all seem to be for women.
I thought maybe somebody here had attempted this before and could point me close to the right direction.

    Oh!
    Thanks, bubba, for the link.
I should point out that this will be a warm [perhaps too warm even for Edmonton] winter jacket. Either very short or 3/4 length, so as to coordinate with kilts.
The fabric is a fake fur-ish thing. I thought it was a real fur-lined hide until I read the label. The outside is suede-ish and the inside is almost an inch-thick hair. Or, not hair. Whatever. It had me fooled, and I've skinned my fair share of animals.

I don't know "Barbour" coats, not sure if we have them here.
I'm looking for a leather jacket myself but finding it hard to get anything decent.
I'm going to Melbourne next month. I may look there.

Take a look at Grand Illusions website. Think I recall that they also sell patterns for both civilian and military greatcoats from the Civil War era..some elegant coats. Worth a look

the flasher argument concerning long coats has its truth. on the other hand on those really cold windy days, where this style would only worn by me, i have it either closed on the street and leave it in the rooms. for normal winter not so windy days i prefer naturally also a pleat height jacket.
but the short coat can t get the cold of the wind out of kilt, unspoken of permanent back flashing.
even better looking like a flasher then being an unvoluntary flasher ;)

Aren't there "Burke and Wills" and "Driza-Bone" making Oilskin Coats in Australia, with are likewise to "Barbour"? In my opinion, this coats would look good with a kilt.

yeah wolfgang, they would look great with a kilt.
on the other hand what about a long coat that must be wraped just like a kilt, closed with buttons so that when sitting we don t look like flashy guys?

I am too new to this but if you don't mind my observation.. I have to agree with Ham on this I have looked at a lot of pics of men wearing coates with the kilt nd i think a coat to the waist is about as long as you dare. Seems it would be hard to give the right look with a coat that only shows shoes and socks and Robs and My Pea Coat? well it looks a litle starnge at that length.

An "Ike Jacket" for more moderate temps with the right color Kilt would look pretty sharp with a kilt I think. If I could get a modern version in black I would like that. They are wool and quite warm for their shorter profile.

but I am still learning so please don't be offended at my uneducated opinion....

    i absolutely agrre with you.
when talking about what is best looking, no long coat
can do the match. from esthetical view u are 100%right. i thought of an temperature view ;)

i m just thinking about how to get minimum damage with a long coat, because on the long run i don t see any other possibilty with me, kilt and winter , except the long coat. getting this icy wind under my kilt would a few sizes too big for me.
i was outside last winter with my 13oz kilt and it felt to mee as soft as my 10oz summer kilts in those winds. but i m still waiting on a military kilt, then i m challenging the power of nature again ;)

Either a short jacket or a long coat (mid-calf or ankle length) with boots would get around the "flasher" look.
