Nahhh, you got right idea... but the purpose wasn't to micro-analyze all the various permutations, but only to indicate generaly basic demographics. I think keeping it simple was the best approach.

Hi All!
I wasn't sure where to place myself. I do own two casual canvas kilts from 13th Colony kilts but I wear them far less often than the traditional tartans I own and then only about the house and yard. As my experiance with kilts has grown I find myself gravitating more firmly to the traditional side. I like the way tartan looks over the plainess of the casual solid color kilts. That being said I have absolutely no problem with a casual non-traditional kilt. It's like me and tea, I like it but I like coffee better.
So I put myself down as a soft traditionalist. BTW interesting poll.
Slainte' !

I disagree . . .
I LOVE tea (esp. sweet ice tea), but HATE coffee!!!
BUT, that is a whole other topic . . .
As for kilts, solid belted plaids (particularly in red) and kilts (particularly in tweed) are well documented as quite old, BUT in a traditional cut.
To me the difference is the cut, meaning the waist, the taper, and the width of the aprons. BOTH can be either tartan or solid.
Traditional:
high waist (belly button area)
wide apron
tapered for close fit
Modern:
pants waist
"narrow" apron
little to no taper (not much needed for the close proximity of rump to waist)-> often this taper is an two or four big darts, as opposed EVERY pleat on a traditional kilt.
As for the pleat style, either can be knife/side pleated (like most traditionals AND moderns) or box pleated (as in Matt and my traditionals and the modern X Kilt).
The above is an attempt at definition clarafication (esp. for the more newbie among us).
My preference is STILL for traditionals in tartan wool, but I have developed respect for other modern ones and may someday (in the distant future . . . maybe . . .) get one (or make one in a tartan).

Trouble with simple-question polls is that the simple answer pay not reflect the underlying truth.
My answer : I'm a Happy Dualist (sounds as if I don't care, one way or t'other)
Facts : I prefer tartan by far, but also wear home-made plain cotton garments, when even 5 yards of wool is too warm.
I prefer good worsted wool by far, but it's expensive.
I like the swing of the pleats, but don't really need all that cloth.
I have no wish whatsoever to acquire a wide-flaired (=shapeless) utilikilt with attachments and pockets all over.

Although I'm a duelist in that I do wear both traditional and modern kilts, I much prefer wearing the tartan.

I'm a soft traditionalist, with a slight leaning towards modern. I don't like UKs, but they are fine for others. I would, however, wear a Freedom Kilts, or a Pittsburgh kilt (if they ever start making them again).

My feelings too. To me, the UKs just don't look "right". However, one of the Freedom Kilts that have the traditional look with modern materials is on my wish list.

I'd've taken choice #2 had my my experiences with kilt owning/wearing started many years sooner and my money been more plentiful for wool. However, I love my UK's and SWK's. So, for now and likely into the longer term future I'm a contented kilter in choice #3.
Go, have fun, don't work at, make it fun! Kilt them, for they know not, what they wear. Where am I now?

I picked "dualist" even though I don't own a tartan trad yet. YET!
