Well boo on me, I've gone and switched from the kilt to shorts for my hike....

How could I do this attrocious thing?

I completely rely on other people for help, most of all for hitchhiking into towns which are up to 50 miles away. I noticed very quickly that not only were cars passing me by, but people were staring at the kilt. Now, I'm not one to care what people think about me, but if it's hurting my chances of getting a ride I need to reconsider how to sell myself. I've gotten some good messages from people about the kilt, including one from a woman who helped me last year on my hike, saying she wouldn't have helped if I hadn't been wearing the kilt, but I'm going to stand by my decision for this trail.

I hope you can all forgive me.

Anyway, the hike goes on, with the ups and downs (both physically and mentally) that come with it. Follow along at http://www.trailjournals.com/haiku_cdt

By the way, I'm in Silver City, NM, about 150 miles north of the Mexican border.

And besides, you can always wear the kilt while you are actually hiking and not looking for the ride! Good luck and I, for one, Am looking forward to reading your blog whilst you are on your adventure!

I'm pretty sure that Andrew's pack weight allows for only one or the other, not both.

IMHO, there's always room in the weight allowance for an extremely lightweight pair of nylon shorts. However, he's doing the hike, not me. (I put my gear on wheels.)

I probably could carry the shorts and only change into them when I get to a road. However, every little bit of weight counts. I don't even carry anything to change into when I do laundry (which sometimes makes doing laundry at a public laundromat a little more exciting!). The shorts are working out for now, and have no fear - I have a closet full of kilts waiting for me when I return from my hike.

My journal is updated through yesterday, and I've just sent home a digital photo card with about 300 pictures on it, so at least some of those will be up soon.

We don't think bad of you. A ride is way more important than fashion. Do what you have to do and have a good time. Thanks for the update.

Incredible effort, and I am envious. You're a great advocate and promoter of the kilt.
    May God speed your journey.
