And, uh, Alan H, feel free to keep sending those examples. I'm getting ideas for my own wife, and some of them have to do with clothing.
ON a serious note, Panache and Alan both make the excellent suggestion of a "little black dress" with sash for dressy affairs. Cant' beat it.
For the booth, I still like the tartan kilted skirt. Or even jeans with a tartan sash if you don't have a skirt yet.

The second post in this thread has a very nice pic of David & Helen Dalglesh at the 2007 Ferintosh Burns Supper. Two excellent formal outfits.

Most of the dress suggestions are absolutely gorgeous.
My fiancee teaches Scottish country dancing and at the balls the ladies wear absolutely stunning ballgowns and regularly outshine the men.
At a less formal event there are three things that will make you outstrip him and the other ladies. (IMHO)
1: Classy.
2: Simple.
3: Confidence.
Find an outfit you like that fits well and you feel good wearing. It doesn't have to have tiaras to make you shine.

This page has pictures of the 'typical" kilted skirts with lengths associated with the names, so you know what you're talking about. Kind of funny, since it' an Italian page.

Also, the model actually resembles a normal human female, and not some supermodel-gorgeous, either top-heavy or skinny-as-a-rail bombshell.

NOTE...thers' a fashion trend out there, which is a "kilt" with a wide swatch of tartan fabric laid out on the bias, across the hips. This is called a 'billie skirt"... or "billie kilt".

Look closely at that skirt. That is NOT the same thing as a mini kilt, but some vendors call them the same thing. Personally, and this is just me, I hate billie skirts, I think the crosswise strip of material looks awful, but if you like it, go for it. Billie skirts tend to be for the younger set, but this place is about wearing what you want, so.... If you look aroun donline you can oftentimes find tartan billie skirts on sale.
Also if th elady really wants a kilted skirt but is on a budget, LOOK ON EBAY....I said Look on ebay!... you w ill not believe the ridiculoulsy low prices for secondhand, *Gorgeous* kilted skirts.

I think you two are being naughty. There is no way I'd wear something like that: I'd get sunburned all over. - Mrs. JM I know that some women would wear that however. They probably don't have two babies though
hey I have three kids and id wear it scare off the natives lol.

For example...

That Simplicity pattern for a halter-top dress is almost certainly made in several parts. The Halter Top is made from a few pieces and it's almost certainly attached to the skirt below it.
Ok, so just make the halter top in tartan and DON'T make a skirt below it, and voila! That pattern will cost you what...five, ten bucks?
For an even more dramatic look, make the front and back panels of that halter top in tartan, and the side panels in solid-color material that coordinates with the tartan...or black....
