I was always told it was not, in fact, an "f" but referred to as the "medial" S. Obviously, someone, along the way, decided it would be brilliant if the little "s" simply resembled the big "S"
Citing such illustrious examples as "Uu" "Vv" and "Xx" this bold new idea was put forth into action, probably by some long-winded motion in the House of Commons!
On a somewhat related note, I believe Lallans had a letter that looked like "z" but was used to represent a "y" sound. Later, it was abolished (likely in the same motion
) and was replaced with "z." ("Zed" to the rest of the world, "Zee" to our American friends; and apparently for a little while, "y" to Lowlanders!) So, Mackenzie should be pronounced Mackinney, for example.
On a more clofely related note, Greyfriarf fure lookf pretty cool, if I do fay fo myfelf!
