The only time you have to worry about shoes is when you are going formal, and even that can provide you with interesting discussions.

To be quite honest, everyone I would ask on Prince's Street said that shoes were the least important part of the outfit. That meant that I didn't own ghillie brogues or formal shoes until the past year (meaning over 25 years of wearing the kilt) when I started wearing proper formal outfits.

I used to wear timberlands, tassle loafers, and pretty much whatever felt right.

I came up with a pair of black suede hiking/ work boots at a Wal Mart that work well. Very lite and comfortable.
But for formal I'll always wear ghillie brogues. To me it's just part of the "look". That's just me.

I was reading the Clark McGinn's Ultimate Burns Supper Book where he is discussing highland dress, in particular shoes (p. 44). His opinion:

In strict full dress...ghillie brogues or buckled black shoes are worn. In practice, any shiny black pair of formal shoes will see you through the evening. In the day, brogues...are the benchmark, but not necessary nowadays
That, as I said in my earlier post, tends to be the opinion regarding shoes with highland dress. In other words, there is quite a bit of accepted latitude on footware, even though brogues are considered the "proper" footwear. But, I am not sure how accurate the word "proper" is given how many Scots wear other types of shoes.

As I said, I finally bought a couple of pairs of brogues after 25 years of wearing the kilt with other types of shoes. Not to mention, people who make a living selling Highland wear were telling me that shoes were the least important part of the outfit. Not that they wouldn't have sold me the brogues, but that was the place you could economise.

In Florida, Flip-Flops are always considered acceptable for any attire that doesn't require a tie.

Fly fishing in a kilt? Now that sounds like an interesting proposition. I've always wanted to try my hand at fly fishing, but had not thought of that as a kilted activity.

A lawyer wearing brown shoes - I dunno. You're in contempt.

I met a female banker from CA. She was wearing a business suit and flip-flops. I refrained from asking.

I wonder if they make waders that work with the kilt? This could be a very cold pastime.

It depends on what your fly fishing for! I love fly fishing for bass and panfish from the boat. No problem there, especially from a pontoon boat with a full cooler of beer and some brats on the grill.int:
