Well, I guess you white hose sorts told us "traditionalists" where to go. Funny how we can be shunted to the side, and made to feel like the bad child on the way to the wood shed.
One day maybe you will see the error and folly of your ways. WHITE HOSE JUST LOOK PLAIN SILLY!!!
That is my opinion, and the opinions of so many who really know about such matters. Go ahead and wear them; wear those skirts you call kilts too. It doesn't matter to me, and I sure get a good laugh out of it. Luckily, we all have the right to dress as we please, to make fools of ourselves if we so choose, and thumb our noses at those with good taste. There certainly isn't any need for us purists to give any more advice, because what we suggest is pretty well ignored, labelled as feminine or "nancy", and called old fashioned. Oh well, I can keep reading your posts and have a good chuckle.

When I saw this thread, my immediate response was "Oh no, not again!" But I have to throw something in here about the GM (?) article. I used to wear white sox with trousers on a regular basis, the U.S. Navy officer dress uniform for summer! The shoes were white, with white soles, The trousers were also white, the shirt (short sleeved, with shoulder boards) white, or the tunic (dressier) was white with brass buttons. The sox Had to be white.
For my own preference I will wear a colour that complements either the jacket or a colour in the kilt. But Jamie has the right of it, this time.

Sanford,
I was trying very hard to recognize that the points you and other traditionalists are valid.
I was also trying to across the understanding that there are other views that also have validity.
I will stand up and defend you for the marvelous outfits you wear.
The trappings of the older styles deserve respect (but I will respect those that do not find all such to their liking)
They may harken back to an older time but they are stylish and obviously worn well.
A great many of us enjoy and respect the information that you offer.
Accusing a great number of the forum (and kilt wearers world wide) as looking silly in white hose is not particularly helpful and shows a bit of denial in comprehension of trends in modern kilt fashions.
By all means say "I think white hose look silly" . You have an opinion grounded in tradition. This style is not appealing to your aesthetic values and traditional sensibilities. Sweeping statements like " WHITE HOSE JUST LOOK PLAIN SILLY!!!" aren't useful, cause arguments, and make your sense of style seem antiquated and frozen.
I think most (if not all) older styles of men's fashions put the modern one's to shame.
But that doesn't mean that modern styles can't look good.
I hope you can find it within yourself to acknowledge that XMTS is a great mixture of old and new.
Stick around and continue to show us how it was done "back in the day".
You might inspire a few people.
Heck Todd got me to wear charcoal grey hose for our Burns Night Supper (but didn't get me to throw out my white hose-you never know when you want to look as debonair as Hamish ) .
You never know, maybe Glen will continue the work and it will be diced hose next year.
To one and all

I'd have to say though I really do loathe the prevalence of White Hose, if you like the look go ahead and wear them. However if you get an opportunity go ahead and wear a pair of Argyll or Diced hose. From someone who has had the chance to go to events with Diced and Argyll hose I just have to say this one touch elevates the outfit.

Agree. I must say that I have never gone up to anyone in white socks and told them that they needed a little color in their life.
Alan H, please sit down and remain calm. As far as I can see, you are the most upset person in this thread. In fact, yours was the first post I read in this thread where I detected irritation at the subject. You really don't have to read the thread if it it's going to upset you that others are passionate about such things. People sound off about opinions in regard to Scottish attire, and to disagree about such things is really not as serious as some things in the world. We'll grant you that. However, isn't that the point? We can argue about white hose, get very passionate about it, and then have a beer afterwards and be friends. This is, after all, a kilt forum. This isn't a religious or political forum, where things could really get heated. In a kilt forum people are bound to argue about things related to... well... the kilt.

There are some things I feel fairly strongly about with regard to appropriate attire, in general, and kits in particular, but, an interesting introductory article (and maybe some valid points) notwithstanding, white socks are not one of them. I don't wear them but I don't care...at all...who does.
I did think that the above comment was the best in the thread, however.
