There was a bit in today's sports page that stated that under the old Olympic hockey format (pre-1990's) there was no "gold medal game" per se. Under that format, the US would have been awarded the gold in these games, having reached the tournament's end undefeated, and having beaten Canada in a prior round.
I don't understand how that worked in those days. Didn't USA win the gold in 1980 in a "gold medal game" against Finland...?
