You think very much like I do! Like historians do. What does the evidence show? So often when these things are held up to the light, little remains.
But it's true that the ancient Irish costumes recovered from peat bogs, at least the ones I've seen photos of, have a brown shade, as if they were soaked in Guinness for a long time.
But why replicate the shades of tartan buried in peat for centuries? The original wouldn't have looked anything like that when worn originally.
I think it's simply a fashion thing, giving modern customers more colour choices, which isn't a bad thing at all.

I'd like to say, for the record, that I've been soaked in Guinness for a long time and am still the same color that I started out as.

Fyi
Left a Lamont modern kilt on the backyard clothesline for over a year. It went through one winter and softened considerably but faded only very,very slightly.
