that's a shame
My wife doesn't mind at all because she knows its about pride in your heritage, wich alot of people lack where Im from. Just tell your wife the same thing I told mine. Just because Im an American who like to wear a kilt, doesn't mean Im going to tell people im here from Scotland on holiday and fake an accent everywhere we go !! It's an opportunity to educate people. Good luck brother

Thanks for this post. You've given me much gratitude for not having a wife, rather a number of ladyfriends who enjoy it when I'm kilted.
Hope you can talk it out....
A suggestion for those who fear the same response from their wife. Bring home all sorts of books and magazines on hang gliding. Then switch to kilts. She'll probably be more accepting.

In my experience (girlfriend, not wife) it matters quite a bit what type of kilt and how I wear it:
- My lass doesn't much care for modern kilts (Utilikilt et al.).
- If we're going out in public, she likes to see me kilted up nicely. This is usually reserved for special occasions or big events.
- I sometimes wear a kilt very casually around the house when my lass is in sweatpants and we agree not to complain about each other looking like a slob...
Before giving any advice to the OP, I'd like to know what type of kilt and how he was wearing it? I'd also like to know if he asked his wife if she would approve of a different outfit, or the kilt being worn on a different occasion?
If she is categorically against any kilts, ever, then I'm sad for the OP

It seems that every time I go out kilted 2/3 of the women I meet compliment me and the garment. My wife used to get annoyed having strange(r) women coming out of the blue to say how much thel like to see a man in a kilt. She's used to it now, and has accepted a degree of scottish dress herself (she's French by birth).

Doc Canary, you had a good case. Shame on the state attorney for dropping the charges!

My two cents:
Your commitment to your wife is stronger and more important than any garment or ancestry. However,
My significant other despised the idea of a kilt at first, but now we are about a year in and I am wearing one ( that she is buying me as my groom present) in my wedding! So, it takes some time, but my guess is that she will come around.
In the meantime, here is the link for all those wondering:

Also, take her to some highland games and have her watch the athletes. I told my fiance I wanted to compete and buff out a bit more like those guys, and she became a lot more fonder of the kilt. Food for thought. God bless and I will be praying it works out.
