Perhaps they are authentic to the period, but I have a suspicion that other colours were in use at the time, especially red.

As for authentic, I don't know, honestly. I would suspect they aren't, but you can get away with them. The concern with the tartans with a lot of red is many of the easily found plaids/tartans are clan tartans. So, to avoid the connection, it's easy to just pick one that doesn't have the more vibrant colors (red, yellow, or green primary).
Alan, you are spot on. It's why I'm an ex-Chirurgeon, not current. I burned a few bridges when I was younger because I tried to get others in the local groups to realize what we did was play at the period, not re-create it.
