Thats a nice looking jacket Frank. It will indeed look better when its cut down. I was out looking myself today. Not sure what to look for though.

Best to look for a 3 button tweed jacket, ideally with patch pockets (extremely rare combo) The trick is not to have the lapels looking too long for the short cut of the jacket and not to have the pocket flaps too close to the hem of the jacket once shortened.
A three button jacket will have the right length lapels once you cut away the third button hole in a nice sweep for the sporran

Thanks Richard! You're to blame for this ya know...

I'm going to order a custom dark charcoal gray tweed vest from USA Kilts to go with it, but that will take longer than Victoria will take on the jacket, or at least I think so.

I have to be over in Hudson tomorrow, so I'm stopping at that Goodwill store again, see if they have anything new.

    Enjoy your evening sir.

Just saw your response Cecil. Thanks, this is a real nice jacket, I'm still pinchin myself!

I think anything you can find in tweed that fits you will work, but you don't run across these Harris Tweeds cheap often, so I wasn't gonna be choosy!

Every time I go out to the thrift stores, I usually find a few Haris Tweed jackets, mainly gray. Once a brown one, but sadly not my size.... I did a few conversions myself and a few of those didn't work (yes, I am that bad....). The usual range of costs is around 5$ CAD. Value Village can be a good stop, but the prices have skyrocketed in the last few years.....

My jacket was sent out Priority Mail about 10 EST this a.m. to VMac, just so y'all know. Rocky has recommended a dark gray vest for it, and I hope to order that next week, along with a Forrester tartan kilt for the little woman.

Enjoy the day, rabble all that you are!

Congrats on the sweet find! I think I may go on a similar hunt now.

It should go without saying, but don't forget to check the women's section either. The shorter length of a kilt jacket can sometimes be mistaken for a woman's cut jacket, and the epaulets on them push them farther that way, in most of your thrift shop worker's minds. Sometimes the workers there know what they've got, but a lot of the times they don't. (The goes without saying is because you should be checking the women's skirts section as well, for obvious reasons.)
