Yeah gotta agree, knotwork on the circle, solid on the cross, knock the crossbars off - excessive - and have a motto just dont like the kilt garment not costume thing. I just think it needs to say more in fewer words.

Now we're getting somewhere. Symbolism beyond the design.

does it need to have a motto on it? I think the knotwork circle behing the X will be more than ample.

Now we are getting to the nitty-gritty, like Bubba said lets get to symbolism.

How many kilt pins do you see that are not long and narrow? Even the ones that aren't swords tend to be long and narrow.

    Like these:

Perhaps there is a reason? Maybe they are long and narrow to provide enough weight to hold the kilt down without a)being gaudy or b)disrupting the tartan.

I don't know if there is a reason, or if it is just because everybody that makes kilt pins looks at what is out there and tries to make it similar.
I just think that we can make it unique and recognizable without reinventing the wheel.
If we were designing a new car we wouldn't make it with seven square wheels just because there are already a million cars out there with four round ones.

Casey, I hope you didn't take my post as an attack on your previous statement. I was mostly responding to what seems to be the most popular idea right now of making the pin a circle. I just had the car analogy pop into my head when I read your post.

I think the idea of an X with a circle of celtic knotwork would make a really great pin. I just don't know if it would make a good kilt pin.

I have a couple non-sword type pins, They work fine and look good. Nothing says it needs to be like every other pin out there.

I guess I'm in a minority. I like the four crosses on the circle, and I also like Alaskan's first drawing better than the Version B. I think that using Alaskan's lower knotted section and the four cross circle would make a mighty nifty pin.

That would make the bottom half of the circle knotwork and the upper half solid for engraving a motto.

Perhaps the motto should be: "'tis na a skirt!"
