I thought the same thing until I bought one. It's a wonderful alternative to dress slacks and a blazer. Unlike the latter, I enjoy wearing mine. It actually gets worn more than I thought it would.
Blu, do you have an argyll, or is it a Prince Charlie? I couldn't tell in your pic.
since i've only (sadly) got one kilt, i would only wear it formally every once in a while. so i think the eton jacket is the way to go. colin! what site is that one from, the one you posted the pic of? thanks.
A head waiters Eton style jacket might be a good one. Change the buttons and it's about the right length and not too fancy. Should be able to get one for $40 or so.
Some guy posted this site on the Bravehearts forum. Eton jackets for $40. I've considered going this route, because I'm cheap.
One problem i see with the Eton style jacket is that the collar is shawl style (rounded), while all the scottish jackets I've seen are notched lapels (the cut-out triangle). If I wanted something really formal for an important event, I would rent or buy the authentic pieces, or not go. If I didn't have a lot of cash, but just wanted to look a little smart, I would probably do what Richard did, and have a regular jacket tailored. I would probably pick a solid color other than black, since I wouldn't be using it for formal.
Yes, I agree. The only reservation I had with the Eton was about the shawl lapel. I'd rather have a notched lapel. But, hey - you can't argue with the price!
