Greatest living, perhaps, but the greatest by no means. I've some archival recordings of James Scott Skinner which blow me away 100 years after the tracks were first laid down. More recently, Johnny Cunningham (may God rest his soul) was a revelation to hear playing. Johnny was also a raconteur of the first water, and lots of fun to tip the odd brew back with.

If you ever get a chance to go to a concert - don't think of it as a bunch of Brigadoonery. Go to the concert. She's fantastic!

Another Canadian band
Another Montreal based band that is sadly no longer performing together is Ad Vielle Que Pourra. I've not seen anyone mention them yet in this thread, and so I thought I'd throw their name out there. They are amazing recorded, and even moreso live. Their music is primarily French and French-Canadian, but there's a heavy Breton influence to them.

So, what's on your shelf?
...or, what should I add that I've missed?
I will be honest.....To save money, I just joined Live365 internet radio, and when I am in the mood for pipes or celtic music, I just go through stations until I find a tune that fits my mood. I do believe my wife bought one cd at the Richmond Highland Games, but I don't recall what it was.

I listen to Live365 a lot as well.
I also discovered something else recently - Pandora.com Here's a quote from the site:
For almost six years now, we have been hard at work on the Music Genome Project. It's the most comprehensive analysis of music ever undertaken. Together our team of thirty musician-analysts have been listening to music, one song at a time, studying and collecting literally hundreds of musical details on every song. It takes 20-30 minutes per song to capture all of the little details that give each recording its magical sound - melody, harmony, instrumentation, rhythm, vocals, lyrics ... and more - close to 400 attributes! We continue this work every day to keep up with the incredible flow of great new music coming from studios, stadiums and garages around the country.
We've now created an interface to make this available to music lovers so they could use this musical 'connective-tissue' to discover new music based on songs or artists they already know.
Pandora™ is the doorway to this vast trove of musical information. With Pandora you can explore to your heart's content. Just drop the name of one of your favorite songs or artists into Pandora and let the Genome Project go. It will quickly scan its entire world of analyzed music, almost a century of popular recordings - new and old, well known and completely obscure - to find songs with interesting musical similarities to your choice. Then sit back and enjoy as it creates a listening experience full of current and soon-to-be favorite songs for you.
It serves the same purpose as Live365 for me - to find new music - but uses different parameters for selecting the music.

Whew!! I've really got to update this thread more often! I hadn't done anything since Oct.
Anyway, the master list in the first post is up to date, and I've included a few that were mentioned in the my fav. celtic rock thread as well.

BTW, I found this list on Amazon. It's not an XMarks member's list (as far as I know) so I haven't included it on the master list yet, but in the spirit of the thread (finding new music), I'm posting it here. If anyone wants to recommend any of these groups, I'll be happy to add them into the master list; if people think I should integrate the whole list... well, I'll do that when I have more time.
The "disclaimer" says "Don't expect all these bands to sound like the Pogues, Flogging Molly or Dropkick Murphys. Just as there is Celtic punk, there is also Celtic metal, hard rock, mainstream, electronica, world beat, jam band, fusion, psychedelic etc. Some bands just add a drum kit and electric bass to a folk lineup. Here you'll find the good, the bad and the ugly, according to your taste.
I haven't heard some bands so there will be a few mistakes, but most I have heard, and most identify themselves as a type of Celtic rock."

This thread is great. Thanks to all who have put into it. This thing has essentially become my music wishlist.
I would like to add "The Poozies". Great little Scottish group.
I noticed some small confusion about the name of that afro-celtic band. Their official name was "Afro Celt Sound System", but now they officially call themselves: the "Afrocelts". I love this group. I never get tired of their music.
