Look in the pictures section for the Greenville kilt night. I think there is one in there.
THANK YOU for pointing me there! There is a picture that might be what you are talking about that looks perfect! It really doesn't resemble the loud swatch on Stillwater's site though, so I see what you mean (if we are looking at the same one). {excited now, thanks!!}

I would suggest either the Black Watch or the Black Stewart. Both are very nice, but a little more subtle. They do have a bit of a limited selection. They keep costs down by making kilts in quantity, and so concentrate on the more popular tartans.
Kilts can definately be worn without hose and flashes. Typically a nice black boot with higher socks scrunched down - my favorite casual look. Really you could wear just about anything with kilts. I personally think the hose & flashes make a better formal look.

Ooh, one more question, if I may - will the "standard" kilts from Stillwater have that lovely swing action I am looking for, or do we need to spring for wool to get that?

I own a standard in Irish National.

A formal Picture of the Stillwater Standard
Here is one last picture of my new SWK Royal Stewart I wore this evening to our SCD class Burn's Night Celebration.

The lovely Flame-Haired Celtic Amazon Goddess and I agree that it looked really good with formalwear.
Though with my red headed lady at my side, who even notices me?
Cheers

It is. I think it works well and is very dramatic with a formal rig.
On a side note, I noticed bunchdescendant was wearing at our Nor Cal Burns Night the black version of my rabbit fur sporran from Stillwater. I think it would have gone well with formal wear. Oh great, I'm thinking about another sporran! The F-H.C.A.G. is going to kill me.
Cheers

Ah, but could you think of a better way to go?
I just bought another loom. I expect my wife to slaughter me when the UPS guy arrives with the box.

Well I guess on a positive note, at least one can more easily hide a new sporran...
Cheers
