One way to handle the large pic/small pic problem is to have a small pic load first with an option to click for a larger pic. This is a pretty standard way to make sure that people with older computers, slow connections or (God help them) Internet Explorer can get a page to load quickly.
As an irrelevancy, my home cable internet loaded the pic in 2.64 seconds...

The power of the written word always looses out when there is no tone or inflection..
ABAX-what personal attack..i was pointing out your comment about a slow website usually pointed to other problems was a broad and sweeping statement that has no grounding in reality--a slow web page is not a sign of anything but a person (me) that is doing the best they can with the limited mental resources they have in building websites-heck the fact we have a page should be applauded..Someday when we stop reinvesting money in more product we will hire a professional to build it for us...using wonderfully clean codes and images that fly like teh wind across everybodies page.
I love my interenet connection- and it is My right to boast about it-LOL
I would make a comment about being demostrably defensive but i don't understand the word...
YOU SAID "the care and expertise that goes into a website MAY show the care and that goes into the business".....PLEASE---i have said many times I AM NOT a web designer----if you want to say bad website bad company I think you have taken a leap that is not logical..
The fact you even suggest this "MAY" mean you believe truth is relative and that the law of non-contridiction is never true...
You are, as we can all tell a "web dude"...most poeple are not web dudes...and as this thread shows...most people have no problem with the site and it loads fast for them.... I think we have reached the stage of ...>>>>you can not please all the people all the time<<<

I was trying to be easy on myself, and not say I stole the pictures before and am a dirty rotten no good theft that deserves to be horse whipped- but i do want to thank you for clarifying what i was saying so that now the whole word knows my shame.....And to be honest, it was more me being stupid then trying to be dishonest....I know I know..if everybody jumped off a cliff would I...
I have repented and will never again "Borrow" pictures even if they appear to be public unless i first gain permission....
and those pictures we borrowed are the same ones you have displayed on http://giftshop.scottishtartans.org/ladykilt.html
of course you have permission to use them and we didn't - I would guess you are the exception to the rule
As to the minimalist and legalist attitiude you mentioned-we are a US company, operating in the USA, we are subject to USA laws, and laws that are enforceable here in the USA. We are not subject to ENGLISH Laws-at least not since 1776, nor are we subject to laws in China, Mexico, or Brazil.
Now, I have a great deal of respect for you and you are a very knowledgable Gentlemen (and fair) but as to the RIGHT thing, now we can get into an ethics debate which will lean towards opinions.
Of course we also must both look at the fact we both sell the same SORT of items but in different quality levels-so we compete to a degree. You items are more traditional in what they made of and where they are made.

Well Mark,
It would of only cost you 10 maybe 20 kilts to have me redo your website LOL...I can offer you a payment plan maybe a kilt or two per page then at the completion maybe I can catch up with Hamish's 80 kilt LOL...
On another note, Thank you I recieved my Formal sporran the other day. It is bueatiful, I need to take some pics and post a review... It's perfect and will look great for the Royal Tartan Ball in October that the Egypt Shriner's Highlanders is hosting.
Also look for the Highlanders order this week of 16 custom mens kilts and 2 ladies kilts. We are pleased with your service, quality of your products and affordable price. This is what enabled us to order 18 kilts for our band members and spouses.
Thank you, John

I may be late but,,,,,
The pages load fast for me, but I only have a cable connection and not a real good one, either.
Comcast in the SF bay area, to be exact.
FWIW, I will second not using M$ Word for HTML-it sucks at it and makes a bloated file to boot.
I use Evrsoft 1st Page 2000 for HTML. I used it to build my websites. Clean HTML that is easily edited with notepad if need be.

I will say that for those who cannot hack HTML code, OpenOffice is a good substitute. It's free and if you can use M$ Office, you will be comfortable with OO. HTML from OO is a little less bloated, IMHO.

(edit)
BTW, I'm a Firefoxer so I fired of Internet Exploder 7 and lo and behold, it did a about a minute for the page to load. This is at 3.84Megs/sec worth of bandwidth.

Ok... against my better judgement I'll post too.
If I use internet explorer, I can't see ANY pictures.
If I use Firefox they come through fast and clean.
Now laddy, if ye'd just sell a tartan I could use! (LOL)

Sounds to me like all of you IE users need to switch to a better web browser! In my experience, firefox is far better than IE. YMMV though.
p.s., I'm not sure why this thread got so "hot". Mark clearly makes an effort to do things the right way, and corrects mistakes when they're made. In this case, he added a page of kilt photos specifically at the request of x-markers. Furthermore, the sample photo page wasn't available through a public link, so he essentially gave us a *preview* of this as soon as he uploaded it. I'm sure he appreciated the feedback that helped him to improve this page, but really there was no need for the excessive criticism. I'm glad to see that things have returned to their normal level of civility here...

The browsing experience is very different indeed. I guess Firefox does some sort of progressive rendering trick on the images, as it loads the whole page in less than 30 seconds (from a cleared cache) as I posted previously.
IE7 on the other hand clearly doesn't do this trick. From a cleared cache, it took 18 minutes to download just 3 of the pictures before IE's timer expired and it gave up trying on the rest.
Best regards
I never use IE for that reason, but the security IE is having. I to tried IE and found it loading way to long and firefox took no time at all.
