I'm with you SFCRick! That's why I moved from the Midwest to the desert Southwest. My next move will be to Hawaii. My problem here is wearing my kilt & hose when it's 110F.....it can be a little toasty!

Aye, you make a good point. I have no problem with my legs, as long as I'm moving. It's standing still that will get me! That's when I'd want to be able to insulate the knees a bit.

All my cold weather dressing habits were developed for active pursuits (both south and midwest locales), but things like winter stargazing are a significant challenge for me.

Now that winter is officially here (well, in the Northern Hemisphere, anyway), this thread needs to be revived!

Fluter, you're right, standing still has its problems. If you're in a situation in which you have to stand in the cold for a long time (on duty for an event or on the job, standing in a queue, watching a parade, at the Inauguration, etc.), you might want to invest in a pair of flesh-coloured dancer's or skater's tights (from Danskin or Capezio, for example), either the footed or the footless type, to wear under the kilt. Medium and larger women's sizes will fit lots of men, and for the taller guys, tights are made for male dancers, as well as for extra-tall women, so if you look around you should be able to find some to fit. For the chunkier gents, there are XXL men's sizes, or plus-sized women's tights available through web sites and mall stores like Lane Bryant and Catherine's. Standing around outdoors, it's probable no one would notice the tights on your knees!

If you can't find flesh-coloured tights or don't want to spend that much, even sheer panyhose are a lot warmer than you'd think, so you could try that. If you have really hairy legs, pantyhose could be a bit noticeable up close, but on guys without a lot of body hair, they'd be almost invisible. Any of the long-length types of underwear already discussed can be worn under (or over) tights and pantyhose, or even layered both under and over.

Another option is to get a pair of dancer's legwarmers to put on over your knees -- not as discreet as tights, but easier to put on and off.

It haas been below zero for almst 3 weeks now here in Montana, and with wind chill, about 40 below. With a good wool kilt, and thick wool hose, I haven't been uncomfortable. the worst is the wind. I would refuse to wear tights though- that just seems wrong to me.

Isn't Scotland, birthplace of the kilt, on the same paralel as Alaska?

Labrador I believe, but the Gulf Stream gives the UK a more temperate climate.

The correct term is "emergency base-layer long underwear." See, it's not so bad that way.

I do know my way to the local dance supply outlet, but having a stock of high-quality black fleece underwear, I'd probably just bob-tail a pair per the Wizard of BC's suggestion.

Ihave worn a kilt in all sorts of cold and high places -13 c to 11000ft up in the Alps and as long as my hands were kept warm it was always warm enough it does not matter whether you wear underwear or not with a decent kilt there is no difference

I went to xmas eve service in my kilt......mind you i was in bloomington Illinois at the time...14 F with windchill -5 and it got a little chilly...I was colder wearing running pants on my 4 mile run earlier that day.

I also went out for a night in Lo Do denver when it was 5 F with no problems and I'm an Arizona desert rat! just keep your upper body warm and the rest will follow suit. ( just warm up your hands before going to use the restroom)
