That's the reason, why i like it just more, to wear my early kilts ( i call them so, because they don't have sewn down pleats, only a waistband) and a plaid 100" x 60". This would be the piece of fabric of the upper part of my belted plaids, cut into two pieces and sewn together. I close it with a fible on my left shoulder, but if i don't like to wear it, because it is to hot weather, or i have some work, i can take it off, but wear my early kilt. That's the way, Liam Neeson wears it in Rob Roy. You can tuck it to the belt, but there are some other alternative ways to wear it. So the answer, why not wear a belted plaid, if you like this style, is easily answered. The inhabitans of the highlands liked the belted plaid, but this new style was much more useful.
@Matt: Great Work, i like this style too

I like this half-belted plaid. It reminds me of the invention made for the 1995 Rob Roy movie. Is it made similarly?

Hi Jack!
Matt has sewn some pleats in his plaid, he describes it when he started the thread. My plaid is just the upper part of the belted plaid, but when i make a new early kilt, i don't cut the upper part into two pieces, but take a piece of fabric 100 " x 60". That's the easy way without any sewing and when i wear the early kilt with this plaid, nobody realises, that it is no belted plaid. This plaid is a little voluminous, but not to much and i can pull it over my shoulders and over my head, as if i wear the belted plaid. Tha's why i like this style seen in Rob Roy, so much

I did this at the Tartan Day celebration in April. It looked great! Unfortunately, I do not have a photo...

Yes, it looks great, it's more practical and it remembers of the belted plaid. I think, so the question, why the early kilt with a great plaid, if you like the belted plaid, is answered
I like the belted plaid and i have more than 20 of it, but when it is hot weather, the early kilt is much more comfortable and i would like to know, how much people didn't recognise, that Liam Neeson has worn the early kilt and not a belted plaid most of the time in Rob Roy.

Hi Sionnachdubh!
Yes, so true and i love the old dress so much and it's better to wear than formal dress. I like formal dress too, but it's nothing for everyday use.
