I almost always wear some sort of sporran. That said, I went on a hike at camp last week and discovered that I'd left my sporran at home. I use a nylon hip pack for hiking. The boys were horrified at the thought of their Scoutmaster in a kilt until the compliments started, especially the female camp staff.

Home alone - no sporran. Out in public - sporran.

I wear a sporran when out and about but not when lounging about at home.
I wear a belt unless I'm wearing a waistcoat with my PC.
My wife is firmly of the opinion that the trad tartan kilts I wear "need" to have a sporran and/or belt (or waistcoat). She really doesn't like me not wearing one at home - "Too feminine," she says

I do agree with many here that with a tartan kilt, a sporran helps break up the expanse of fabric (and on a guy my size, that's a pretty vast expanse), as well as add weight to help with the wind. However, I have never seen a need to wear a sporran with my UK Workman's as the pockets hold all of my junk, and the fabric weight, combined with the front snaps, keep me from worrying about modesty, so I forgo the sporran. And I also agree with many that if I'm around the house, or spending an evening RPing at a friends' house, I usually take off the sporran, for comfort more than anything else, as the weight generally starts to "weigh" on me.

There's an exception to every exception. I sometimes wear a sporran with shorts or troosers, especially if I'm not wearing my 22-pocket utility vest!

Sporrans.
...sometimes two.
If it weren't for sporrans, I'd have to spend my creative time making shoes or knitting.
Definitely sporrans....

I don't leave my house without a sporran, regardless of the kilt. I have Utilikilts and traditional kilts, I feel like a sporran is part of a kilt. I swim in my kilts, so all I have to do is take my sporran off and I'm set to go.

To each his own, but to me a kilt sans sporran and belt looks a little off.
Cheers!

I am still new to the kilted world and, I am like Phil and Galb . . it just doesn't feel right, to me, to not wear a sporran.
I don't participate in games and such so, I don't have to worry about that . Like Cat, I can see taking it off while lounging around the house. But, if I plan on heading outdoors . . I'll definitely have one on.
