Its great to see a piper who still wears the highland dress like to ones from the golden age of piping, I dont know who his teacher was but I'd guess that his pride may stem from his learning base. He was one of the great pipers of our day, rest in peace.

John D. Burgess was taught by the great Willie Ross. I wonder if that relationship has any bearing on the Ross tartan he wore, since I can not find a tartan associated with the surname Burgess.
Cordially,

Personally, I like his attire.
As for the Burgess name, being one myself I've done a good bit of searching and found that most of them came from England, but a few branches came from Scotland. Many of the Englishmen were merchants that went to Scotland to set up business, then followed the Scots to America. I don't know which direction my genes took, and have found other family connections to Scotland. In my searches I've often run across brushes with Clan Ross and others, but it would only be speculation to connect JD to the Ross name.

I think he did wear ross in honor of willie ross. Although his son wears ross tartan as well.

It's pretty awesome, isn't it? I posted another thread entitled "Pipers of Past Years" in the Celtic Music section. Clearly the military dressed piper's acceptably wear horsehair and other "big" sporrans, but there are even those dressed in civilian attire who obviously get some extra leeway on what's been acceptable accoutrements.

Goat hair and horse hair sporrans have long been the provenance of not just the military and pipers, but also of many highland gentlemen.

I realize that is the case historically, just don't seem to see much evidence of that over the last decades. That might just be my lack of exposure. Is this something you continue to see routinely?

I thought that last photo looked familiar to me. It was on the cover of one his albums from the mid-1970's that I have downstairs with the rest of the vinyl. You remember those don't you? Spun around at 33 1/3 rpm?
