So, I was on BYU campus today (Provo Utah) and I passed a young man wearing a blackwatch kilt. Very unusual for BYU, and I am dying to know how he fared. BYU is a very conservative school with a very strict dress code (not that you can't be conservative and still wear a kilt, but I can see some professors not understanding), so it would be interesting to hear how his experience went. I might have asked him if we weren't going in completely opposite directions and if he hadn't had earbuds plugged into his ears. Instead, I settled for staring
Anyway, reminded me of this thread...

Greetings,
I have worn mine on more than a few occasions and have never had any problems at all. Then again, I am a big bald headed mean looking SOB and seldom have problems anywhere I go, whatever I am wearing.
Wear it, have fun, laugh at the idiots who may crack a joke (precious few will, I bet), smile at the compliments and realise, you may not hear anything at all about you being in a kilt. I know that's what happens to me most of the time.
Enjoy,
Matt

I wore my family tank on several occasions at San Jose State University in CA. Only negative experience was from a guy yelling "who the hell are you supposed to be?" Mind you, he was wearing kinte cloth as part of his outfit--you'd think he'd have some understanding of wearing your heritage...
On a related note--if you bring haggis to a fraternity event, you will have a nickname for THE REST OF YOUR LIFE.

Interestingly enough, my daughter's college, Lake Forest, was founded by the Scottish Presbyterians but you wouldn't know it if you went up there...no trace of it around at all. We've been conspiring about cooking up a Lake Forest tartan but my daughter might be the only one who wears it.
The founding story is kind of funny...the Methodists founded Northwestern in Evanston so the Presbyterians figured that they had been one-upped and went farther up the lakeshore to Lake Forest and started their own college. So guess which school ended up with the better football team? At least I don't have to worry about going to the Rose Bowl...ever.
Best

I figured they just didn't want their sons associating with the likes of me. And NU only has to cope with the Rose Bowl about every 48 years, on average!
If you remember the comic strip Tank McNamara, you'll understand when I say that every weekend, we play ESU.

I work at Stanford and I've worn a kilt to work a few days a week for years. I used to get some looks, now everybody just knows that if they want help with their computer or with the software download server I administer, they just find the kilt guy.
In my previous job, I supervised a bunch of undergraduate networking and support techs. Nobody batted an eye, except the department head, but then I could've walked on water and that wouldn't have changed her opinion.
I'll relate a story....
I was down at the coffee kiosk between the two library buildings a few years ago, in line for coffee. It was January, it was gray outside and there was a chilly wind. There were two young ladies in line ahead of me. The one right ahead of me was clearly freaked out by the great big wierd guy in the skirt behind her. However, her girlfriend was braver. She looked at me a few times.
Finally she asked me...."Aren't you cold?"
So, taking a line from Riverkilt...I responded to her.
No, honey. I've got a heater under there.

Probably has something to do with frogs...
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

My wife has returned to Community College to study writing. So when the creative writing classes held a reading, I went along to support her. As she is a bit older than the other students, I was surprised that she had made lots of friends in the classes. I wore my kilt, as I normally do. She is now known at the kilted guy's wife. The kilt, along with her wraiting was the hit of the evening. I answered a lot of questions and got a lot of looks from the younger female students.
Wear the kilt. Enjoy the atmosphere.
