Actually buttoning on one side or another based on gender is a relatively new idea, coming along with the sewing machine and mass production.
does anyone have any Ideas on replacing the lining on a coat, I inherited a lovely wool tan trenchcoat from my grandmother, it's 60's era I believe, but the lining is getting more and more tattered, I've repaired it many times and it just shreds every month or so of wearing. This is the coat, and it's lined with lovely 60's poly satiny stuff (sarcasam).

Ron, I liked your idea of an Ike jacket with a kilt. so...I went to the local military surplus store and just picked up an original 1944 Battledress Jacket to wear when I get myself a Douglas Modern semi-traditional kilt here soon. But the best part is, I got it for $15! (I'm cheap and thus always looking for a bargain.) It looks like it was never issued at all - no rank patches or stitching holes from old patches. It was the only one that would fit me, as it's a size 42R - and there were several more Battledress Jackets, however they were all in the sizes of 36R - 38R and two 40R. So, I guess I was at the right place at the right time.
The only downside to the experience was that my brother picked up a black wool Navy Officer's sweater. Which I saw first, but he had the money for it...

I'm not sure if you found a solution to your coat, String...but I'll give out a lil' bit of my own experience: I've only installed lining into Civil War garments, but what I've always done was to carefully take out the old liner, use it as a pattern and whip stitch the new liner in. Not sure if that's the best idea for yours or not.

Green with envy. I pay big bucks for a Pakistani made replica and you get the real thing for $15. Do gloat. Sadly, nearest surplus store to here is 135 miles and its one of the "modern" surplus stores. The old time one is another 130 miles further.

I have a motorcycle jacket that I wear with the kilt sometimes, but I like these ideas regarding the great coats, battledress jackets, and RAF bombers. In spite of the temptation, I have to remind myself that it just doesn't get cold enough in Houston to wear a great coat. I do have a plastic Inverness cape for rain, though. But, how it pales compared to these wonderful woolens!
Terry, what vendor is using that pic for the RAF bomber jackets?

Well, mine is British, though...not American...so that could be a reason for the price. They were marked on the sale tags the converted sizes of the jackets.
But, your jackets look great!

I've owned a couple of Irvin flight jackets over the years (saves the kidneys when driving with the top down) and can report that: (1) they are bloody heavy; (2) they are bloody hot to wear; (3) they are bloody expensive; (4) they are bloody well worth it! I've NEVER worn one out; I've out-grown them and had them stolen, but I've never had one wear out. And, best of all, I've always managed to sell my "surviving" jackets for at least what I paid for them, Morgan and Bentley patches included. Heartily endorsed!!!

wow, I like the look of those bombers. Much better looking than some of the modern incarnations I have seen.
