Great comment! I too have worn a Balmoral for several years. Keeps my head warm and fits my character. Same for a kilt. I think of a kilt as interchangeable with pants. Just as I can dress up in pair of pants, so, too, I can dress up in a kilt. I also can be casual in either one.

Good topic this, and Matt, your blog says it all, spot on!
More often than not, I like to dress down the kilt. Australians tend to be more casual, generally speaking.
For this reason I am more fond than ever about non-tartan kilts, which now occupy about 50% of kilt wearing time.

    Can you be too kilted?
Of course you can. But you don’t need a kilt (and accessories) to be overdressed. You can be in pants too. Earlier it might have been OK but nowadays it more the opposite, it seems. And according to the description of your friend he certainly was.

That's a good way of putting it. It's like being a sports fan and EVERY article of clothing you have on is in the team colours with the team logo printed on it. It wouldn't look out of place at a game but worn to an unrelated event it would look a bit odd.

I was reminded of this thread this morning, when I took Ann along to her stroke group where they have morning coffee and do gentle exercises. I was dressed down in denim kilt and hooded fleece - off to the shops then back in two hours to collect Ann. One of the members arrived kilted and on crutches (yes that was also how I came into wearing kilts for everyday wear - you can strap a kilt round your waist when you physically cannot get into trousers.) First time I've ever seen him in a kilt. He obviously looked as though he normally only wore a kilt for special occasions and he was wearing it complete with hose and flashes, dress shirt, matching necktie and an Argyle jacket. Made me feel a bit underdressed, but now that I've become a seasoned kiltie I've become accustomed to wearing the kilt as casual wear rather than needing the full set of accessories every time I don a kilt.
