    Scene 22

Administration Office, Great Hall of X Marks the Scot

Jamie and I followed Dee as he led us to the offices where we interviewed prospective members.

“I thought you might want to handle this one personally, Jamie,” Dee said as he led us down the hall.

    “Why is that?” Jamie asked.

We quickly learned the answer when we entered the office and saw who was waiting for us.

“Here he is,” Dee announced as we stepped through the door. The young man waiting there rose and turned to meet us. I knew as soon as he turned around that we would welcome his membership.

“Jamie, Dave,” Dee said as he introduced us. “Allow me to introduce our latest applicant.”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you gentlemen,” the young man said as he extended his hand in greeting. “I hope I can make a useful contribution around here. My name is Ryan.”

    Closing Scene

Chapel, Great Hall of X Marks the Scot

The Chaplain walked up and sat down beside me.

“I noticed you weren’t at the memorial service,” he said. Earlier that day he had held the funeral service for the future Ryan and my future self.

I sat in silence for a moment before I spoke. “I just couldn’t do it. It was just too disturbing going to my own service.”

“But it wasn’t you; you are still alive.”

“But it was the man I will become, or would have become if what we did was successful. Do you think we changed the future?”

“Obviously, since the Vice President is still alive. Only time will tell if that was enough to change the rest.”

“Did we do the right thing? What if our actions only result in some other evil coming to pass?”

“You know as well as I do that there is no shortage of evils in this world. You were given a great gift by receiving the knowledge to stop one of them.”

“But we changed the time stream. How can we possibly know how that will effect things?”

“We can’t know. We are only human. Such knowledge rests only with the one who created us all.”

    Epilogue Scene

Well-appointed office in an undisclosed location

The well-dressed woman looked over the different video screens in front of her. Pictured on each was a different member of her company’s senior staff.

“The first phase of Operation Second Banana has failed. The Vice President escaped the accident,” she said. “Another vehicle collided with our truck before it could complete its run.”

“Was it just bad luck?” asked the male half of a well-dressed couple on one screen.

“Unlikely,” the woman answered. “Witnesses to the accident say that the car seemed to aim for the truck. In fact, they claim that it seemed to speed up just before the collision. It seems to have been a deliberate act.”

“Who was the driver of the car?” asked a man wearing the uniform of Mexican general.

“Unknown,” the woman answered. “The accident scene was almost immediately sealed off by the Secret Service. However, our operative inside the service says that the body of the driver is missing.”

“Missing?” asked the woman from the couple. “How is that possible?”

“Again, it is unknown,” the woman said. “Our operative has experienced a complete shutout from his leadership. It almost seems like a cover-up.”

“Was it Mr. Dove again?” asked a handsome man with a distinctive Italian accent.

“Quite possible,” the woman answered. “Members of his team were spotted at the convention center and there have been reports of men wearing kilts in the area.”

“Dove again!” the General said with disgust. “That man has interfered time and again. Don’t you think it is about time we dealt with him and his kilted cohorts?”

The other people on the screens all spoke in agreement.

“Very well,” the woman said. “I agree. It is indeed time to deal with Mr. Dove, his Retrieval Team, and his compatriots at X Marks the Scot.”
