So...as to those reproduction tartans...will they ever be available in a heavier weight or would it be possible to ask for a custom order of one of them in a heavier weight?

Ah yes, I meant to respond to that question earlier in the thread... sorry. The reason I didn't yet is that I'm not quite certain myself what has lain behind the decision to weave these as lightweight rather than heavyweight. I'll try to remember to ask tomorrow, as I'm on my way down to the mill with a bunch of things to discuss... Watch this space.
But to answer the second part of your question, yes, any tartan can be woven in any colourway in any weight as a special weave. So yes.

Grave news indeed....I've been touting the Dalgliesh cloth to my customers for years, swearing that if they shut their doors then so will I, for I will use cloth from no other mill.
I WAS going to shut down for the summer, but the heck with that - I'll keep the doors open and keep sending in the cloth orders!

Sounds great, I'm looking forward to hearing about this.

Okay, I can now answer that question... The reason that the Reproduction tartans are woven for stock in lightweight rather than heavyweight tartan is, well, that this is how it's been done for years. Hope that's clear. :-) It seems that when the range was introduced, decades ago, it was these fabrics that were the big sellers. That's about it.
I can't promise that this will change overnight. But we have a plan starting to come together for how we feel the ranges offered could benefit from a few changes, which I'd hope will meet with widespread approval (without ever undermining the qualities that make D.C. Dalgliesh tartans great). I'd prefer not to go into more detail publicly at this time, but if anyone has their own ideas and suggestions I'd be happy to hear them either here or by PM.

See the link below for a Dalgliesh heavyweight custom-run in (mostly) reproduction colors. For the yellow in the thread count of the tartan I substituted a gold in place of the "khaki green" color that Dalgliesh uses for yellow in their Reproduction color scheme. Just another example of the great importance of having a tartan mill who will be responsive to customer's requests.

I've said it before, but I have yet to find tartan that is better than Dalgliesh's, bar none.

Now that you mention it, I did follow that thread...just spaced on the fact that it was Dalgliesh who did the work...but who else would it be, eh?
Just that I've been craving something in a five or six yard kilt for somewhat more casual wear and that Reproduction Hunting Robertson would be just the ticket...13 or 16 ounce fabric would make it a lot better.

Brave guy, Nick, I really hope it works out OK. Am working on ways to spread the word and hope to be able to order in the near future too.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

Just did a little bit for the cause and for your efforts in one swell foop, uhhh, fell swoop.
Just ordered a Scotweb Balmoral 8yd kilt in Dalgleish 12oz Douglas Modern Black, probably the last of my Douglas collection, at least until I get the Douglas Weathered tartan material I have on hand made up into a formal kilt. Price was right, although I would have preferred 16oz, but it was a special weave at twice the cost just for the tartan, not including the labor for CTM into the kilt. Sshhhh everybody, I did not tell WIFE yet. After this weekend.

My hands-down favorite combination for a kilt!
If you do have it custom woven, be careful in deciding on sett size/thread count. Hunting Robertson has a very wide sett(white line to white line), and wide setts result in fewer pleats. I find that low-yardage knife-pleat kilts look best pleated to the line when the sett size is around 5 inches.
Best of luck!
