Yes and those old kilts still seem to be around and used for stage productions of Tunes Of Glory.

I love the idea of hunting tartans and dress tartans , I have a MacLaren kit but never seen a dress version , in my collection of kilts I have both a Royal Stewart and Dress Stewart Killts and also heritage of Scotland and I wear those to evening events while for day wear I prefer to wear Mclaren or Douglas or hunting stewart

After reading this thread I had to borrow this film from the library. A suicide and a nervous breakdown, not a "feel good" flic for sure, but interesting.

A good movie but not a fun one for sure.
Jock was a jerk of a subordinate and LTC. Barrows mental (today he'd be ripe for PTSD).

One thing about old films is there were a lot more old soldiers around to get things right. Sir Alec Guiness being a landing craft commander, sub-lieutenant in Sicily and Sir John Mills Being Second lieutenant in the Royal Engineers. The military bearing, correct saluting, uniform wearing, marching all done correctly. Many modern films just don't get it right, particularly if a beret is to be worn.
Whilst JM and AG weren't kilt wearers you can guarantee there was an RSM handy to bend a few actors ears.

Quite right. The actor Richard Todd was a paratrooper during WW11 and in 'The Longest Day' he re-enacted a battle he actually fought in.
The Kilt is my delight !

Lieutenant Colonel David Niven was not allowed to play himself in one war film (the battle of the bulge?) So had the interesting job acting opposite someone playing him self.
DH was in the Highland light infantry between the wars, he left that to become an actor. When war broke out he was one of the few to return from Hollywood and re enlist, this time in the commandos!!

While on the topic of Niven, many may not be aware that Peter Ustinov was David's "Batman" (officer's valet) during the war. This is before Peter became well known as an actor and author.
