Perhaps they REALLY missed their cargo pants and resented your comfort and style. It doesn't sound like their political skills were very strong. But if you went out anywhere afterwards, you would probably get some compliments from random strangers.

One wonders why they weren't wearing kilts themselves, if they were such experts. Perhaps they could model the "correct" way instead of just criticizing.

Don't let these small-minded people get you down.

When someone says to me they think it’s a bit cold for a kilt wearing, I look at their hands and I might say, “Those hands might be a bit too cold for warming me up.”
Go, have fun, don't work at, make it fun! Kilt them, for they know not, what they wear. Where am I now?

Gentlemen my only reply to the question ..."Why are you wearing a kilt in this weather?".....My wife makes me wear something so I don't scare the neighbors"... I smile, she nods and we go about our business .

I, too, have a Tilley hat. It doesn't look bad with the kilt for casual events, although I would not wear for a dressy occasion. I am currently traveling in Thailand, where it has seen quite a bit of use protecting me from the sun and elements.

Although the kilt would be comfortable in the Thai heat, it is not a practical garment here because visitors to temples and palaces are required to wear long pants/skirts to show respect and my kilt is too short (reveals the knees). So I have had to make do with a pair of very lightweight cotton pajama-style pants with a drawstring waist.
