Both spellings are correct. One of my Scottish ancestors in Iowa has the "Argyle" spelling on her tombstone.

Remember, 19th century folks were "creative spellers"!

    "Gipsy" tartan

I came across a gipsy (sic) tartan.

    "Gipsy
    Fancy Tartan
Reference: Wilson's of Bannockburn Book 4.
    1137
The story goes that both name and design were inspired by the well known free-booter and composer of 'MacPhersons Rant, James MacPherson, who claimed to be the natural son of MacPherson of Invereshee by a gipsy woman. "

    Go to http://tartans.byair.net/

    click on "G"

    scroll down to "Gipsy"
