I know this topic has been sorely beat to death, but I have to say...
I think white kilt hose on a full dress outfit look very sharp, as they balance out a white pleated shirt underneath a bow tie. There is a neat symmetry to black shoes/ white hose from the bottom of an outfit, paralleling black bow-tie then white shirt from the top down, with a tartan providing contrasting color in the middle. It gives a formal outfit a neat chiasm.
I like that look.
So there.

My normal daily attire is a pair of khaki pants, white socks, and my Docs.

Ebony and Ivory . . .
From what I've read here in the past, the move to white/cream hose became prevalent with the renting of kilts, as the rental agencies (which includes some kilt shops) started supplying white or cream hose for reasons of economics or convenience (or perhaps, who knows, demand?)
Anyway, white hose started to be seen more and more with kilts, to the extent that it was no longer unusual, and that's where we are now. Its just not unusual.
Look here its on Kinloch Anderson's website:

and here on Geoffrey (Tailor):

and here from Scotsweb:

and again on Houston Kiltmakers:

I think what is getting people's hackles up is the inference that if we are wearing white or cream hose that we are committing a faux pas, or are some how clueless. Are you suggesting that the merchants whose wares are pictured above are trying to make fools of their customers?
If you don't like white hose don't wear it. We are all entitled to our opinions, but yes, unless you are a member of the kilt police, your opinion is just that, an opinion, not the law. As Jamie has tried several time to diplomatically point out, those with differing opinions are not necessarily wrong.
Best regards,
Jake

I certainly don't like it
But I can't say that it isn't a fashion
I personally hold to older styles (i.e. pants that are worn not constantly sliding off my body, but then again I'm a fuddy duddy at heart)
Jamie
Jamie, don't you realize that if everyone started wearing their pants like that, they might decide to switch to kilts! I think all Xmarkers have an OBLIGATION to wear their pants so they slide off their bodies ( with White Socks of course)

These days, maybe we should add "pipe bands"..."Only young boys, some virgins, and pipe bands wear white socks".
And, yes, to you white socks fans (must be from Chicago? tee-hee!)...wear 'em well...BUT, I'll still secretly cringe when I see white socks! Us girls seem to have a built in fashion police system! But, of course, wear what you like to wear, wear what makes you happy!
You've finally cleared it up for me. As a Northsider I thought all this brouhaha was about the White Sox, but that no one on the forum knew how to spell. Around here, only baseball would ignite this much passion.

Jake, yes, I am suggesting that "the merchants whose wares are pictured are trying to make fools of their customers." They have been extremely successful in this actually, and so I tip my balmoral with the scary torrie on top to the marketing chaps. It's quite wonderful how the consumer can be manipulated into thinking something is correct and proper, when really it ain't so. Remember when some men started to wear to black tie events a banded collar shirt with some whacking big black dot where a bow tie should be? Who thought that up, and propagated it among the masses? Why, the tuxedo rental places, of course! And what about the post "Braveheart" craze? Who profitted there?
Many of you have absolutely no sense of humour. The whole point of posting the article about white socks was to get a laugh (although I agree with the premise). I'll never convince you to give up on the white hose with the kilt. All this talk about balancing the black shoes and white hose with the black of the bow tie and white of the shirt, is pure comedy to me, so keep on wearing them my friends!
As I started all this, I now invoke me parliamentary privilige of speaking last on the motion, thereby ending any further debate! Put the question, Mr. Chairman.
Kind regards from the bemused,
Sandford MacLean
