My favorite is the "Seton Modern" for my family Tartan.Thought I have family connection to the Clan Macnaughton.
That Tartan in any form is great too. It's hard to pick a real favorite.

My Father's lineage is English, but those lads married lots of Celtic women, however most were Irish! There is, however two from his side, Ross and Leslie.
My mother was Scots, her clan is Maclaine of Lochbuie, her two grandmothers were both Boyd.
My current (and only) kilt is the red Maclaine. I have material in the ancient sett (blue) that I am saving up to be able to pay a top quality kilt maker to make up. I would also like to get the hunting, very hard to find. Most of the mills confuse the ancient sett with the hunting, as it is nearly identical.
Beyond the above, I suppose I would also go for district tartans, Carolinas (I live there) Lochaber (I own a bit of land there) and the Edzell, which is also the U.S. Navy tartan, (I am ex-Navy).

My family tartan is Hay (as I do not belong to the Clan Hay Society, I won't say "clan tartan"). I do not yet have a kilt in Hay, but I've lately figured out where I'll go to get it made. That said, I have one commercially-made wool overshirt in Hay. Some years ago L.L. Bean was selling them and offering a rotating choice of clan tartans, of which Hay was one. I have several tartan ties all in Hay -- so guess what tartan I'll be wearing next Monday!
Likely I'll wear a UK, though, because outside of the sissy troosers I own two UKs. Between my own efforts with a sewing machine and those of some other kiltmakers, I'll gradually acquire more kilts.
As to other tartans, I think I would stay away from other clan tartans and those of military groups of which I was not a member. As Jock said, it's how I was raised. As a veteran, I could wear the U.S. Army tartan, but that was long ago and far away.
I haven't looked, but there may be a tartan for the U.S. state where I was born, and I believe there is a tartan for the Canadian province where I live. As a soon-to-be dual citizen I wish to honour both my past and my present.
One of the four kilted persons on my university campus has been agitating for years to have a university tartan. We have much heraldry surrounding us here, drawing from local Secwepmc culture as well as the British part of British Columbia. In the past it has been traditional to open all convocations with a piped procession followed by an invocation from a First Nations elder. I understand the piper has now retired, so things may change.
That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

My favorite tartan is the Craig tartan, my surname. I know the Craigs as an independent clan in their own right petered out and became a sept of the Gordons. I also know that the Craig tartan was designed in 1957 by MacGregor Hastie and at that time we hadn't had a chief for a long time(and still don't to this day) so it isn't official. However, I love the tartan and the fact that it has my surname on it makes it even better. My second favorite tartans are any of the Gordon tartans.

Picking a favorite tartan is like picking a favorite child. I refuse to do it. They are all wonderful.

favorite kilt
Out of my 25 kilts, my favorites are: MacAuley Hunting Mod, MacLaren Modern, Rob Roy Modern. I like all 25, because they all are very unique. Could not part with any of them

As a MacTavish, I intend to get Thompson Camel and Thompson Gray, as they are also two of my favourite tartans.
I also love Buchanan, such an interesting tartan..
Forbes is the tartan of the Liverpool Scottish (my family is from Liverpool), it's based on Black Watch, and I simply like it.
Confederate Memorial is definitely on my list as well, for obvious reasons (Deo Vindice, Brothers!) and that it looks amazing.

I wear the following for the following reasons:
1. RCAF - I was an Officer in the Canadian Air Force Reserve, enough said! Per Audra Ad Astra!
2. Black Watch - I admire the bravery and integrity of the Black Watch Regiment both in the Canadian Army and the British Army.
3. Anderson - family connection
4. Saffron - family connection to Ireland.
I am looking for both Tindal and Patterson tartans. Anyone know where I can get these without having to take a second mortgage?
Thanks,
Paul
