Sometimes I match the hose to one of the kilt colors, sometimes I match them to my shirt. Today it's claret with the MacMillan Ancient and a light green shirt. Last time it was brown pattern-top hose with the Gordon Red kilt and a light brown shirt. When I went hiking, I wore the off-white hose that matched my Jacobite-style shirt (with the Leatherneck kilt). Now trhat I think of it -- I more often tie the hose to the shirt than the kilt...hmmm...

Green usually, although I own black ones as well. It's a function of what goes with the kilts I have. As for white, I wouldn't generally wear white socks of any kind off the tennis court, but if other people do that is their prerogative.

Perhaps I may change the habits of a lifetime and buy green hose after reading some of the remarks on this thread. Maybe I have been to set in my ways with regards to kilt hose.
This coming Sunday I'm on board the Waverley Paddle Steamer sailing from Oban, stopping at Tobermory then on to Coll, might be ideal time to give green the go-ahead, it should compliment the Hunting Stewart!

Suggest a vist to a House of Cheviott stockist. I have black (black kilt) varous shades of green and blue depending on the kilt colours. As for white it is "old school" in my book. :-)

I wear both the lovat green and the dark green with the red argyle tops with my Stewart Hunting-ancient and both go well. I do also wear other colors with it as well.

I usually wear black or dark green hose with a solid black kilt. I do own 2 pairs of cream/ecru hose as well, but I do now wear them as often.
I love black hose.

Personally I cannot imagine wearing pure white hose, although I have two pairs in oatmeal (and a shirt to match) and would not turn my nose up at Aran hose (I have long worn Aran jerseys).
I also have hose in black, air force blue, grass green, pale green, moss green (a blend of grey and green threads), claret and mustard. I hope to expand my collection to include pairs in tartan green or bottle green, at least one more shade of blue, bright red and purple (to go with a relatively narrow stripe in the Mighty Men tartan).
I have a pair of hiking socks in khaki, but they are actually too short for kilt wear. I may replace them with proper khaki kilt hose – but on the other hand I might not.
Two-tone varieties that I have in mind are blue and green (to go with the Lindsay Modern kilt I hope to acquire soon) and yellow and dark green (to go with the Spirit of 1994 tartan I designed – these are the colours of Springbok rugby).
While I understand the negative vibes about diced hose, I have seen and admired pictures of very well turned-out kilted gentlemen in diced hose and may in the long run get myself at least one pair, or perhaps Argyle hose to match my Lindsay kilt.

Mike

I have charcoal grey hose to match a tweed jacket, green hose to go casual and cream hose to wear with my Prince Charlie on formal occasions. While I would only wear cream for formal occasions the others are inter-changeable.
I am not a fan of diced hose except where it is worn as part of a uniform or by a piper.
But this is only my £0.02's worth!

We are all the victims of our upbringing. Jimmy & Jock don't like diced hose, most don't like white hose, I was led to believe black hose were for funerals but, according to many kilt shops black is the new white nowadays. Why? Because sites like this have slated the white hose as 'kilt hire' only wear.
The only black hose I have seen nearly always give a dreadful sight of miky-white calves shining through. Not one for the faint-hearted in my opinion. At least white is nearly the same shade! Chunky slightly off-white is my choice with a Prince Charlie but for daywear some self-coloured hose looks best. You still can't beat full tartan hose for formal wear though. And they have the advantage of being so expensive that everybody else look like cheapskates!
