The oddest reaction was the first time I wore the kilt to class last term. (Look of surprise)"Did you get a haircut?"

I had thought that I had nothing to add to this thread --- until last night.
Off we went to a Philippine national day celebration charity event as guests of one of the officers, an old friend. I was pulled from my seat (without warning) and introduced to the crowd as being the first person in the ten-year history of the event to have come "all the way" from Scotland for the party. In fact, we had traveled "all the way" from Falls Church, Virginia, to Washington, DC, maybe 15 miles. I haven't seen my wife laugh so much in years. I think she and our friends liked seeing me try to figure out what, if anything, I ought to have said. She does say I should learn Gaelic so I'm ready if it happens again.
But it was a fun evening!

Went to my cousins high school graduation in my blue self color kilt and got a lot of different reactions, the best part is my uncle walked past me, saw my kilt and kept walking not looking up to see who was wearing it. I stopped by his house to drop off the graduation card for my cousin and went into the house and the family saw and said"hey dad! Remember the guy in the Blue kilt"! I walked around the corner of the hallway and said yea he was family! The shocked looks we're priceless! Lol This uncle is also one that has wanted a kilt for the last twelve years!

Thumbs up to all post. I'm a newbie to wearing a kilt, I just received mine on May 15th, 2012. I myself was cat called coming out of a pub, asked what clan I belonged to, and checked out. And now for the displeasing reactions: I had a young Mexican woman with several kids start snickering and making fun of under her breath, to which I maintained my composure. And I was coming out of the ScotsFest Highland Games when two ladies asked me where I bought my "skirt" and if they could buy one inside. I politely informed them it was a kilt, and each clan has their own, and it took me 3.5 months to get mine from Scotland. Which they shrugged their heads and walked away.

Two very good reactions on the same day. Two years ago I surprised my father at his church on Father's Day wearing my Cunningham kilt and recently modified jacket. I spent the night at a hotel and was checking out in the lobby while dressed in kilt, tie, hose, belt and shoes, about to head to the church. A woman had her back to me talking to her friend, who saw me and told the first woman to turn around. She did, looked me up and down and said, "You look splendid!"
The second was after being told how sharp I looked by my father as I met him in the aisle. An older gentleman came all the way across the sanctuary to vigorously shake my hand and tell me "I highly approve."

The best reactions I ever got:
I went to a friend's small outdoor wedding as my first time kilted outside of any games. She told me that when she saw me walking up the hill to the ceremony area, she had to stare out of fascination.
Walking around China, there have been several riding bicycles by me with their heads turned nearly backwards, some women have yelled out "Hey Scotland" towards me, and one woman just grabbing me at a bar to dance.
My favorite reaction that I've had was when I had to skip out to the store for something on Easter. No reaction at all in the small town that I live in.

I live in a small town too. Have often wondered if the folks with no reaction to my kilt were thinking, "He must be crazy - don't mess with him."

In Wichita Falls, Texas you also don't mess with folk who have bigger b**lls than you.

I doubt if it's the kilt.
