Certainly women may wear kilts, with or without sporrans. If they are band members it is proper for them to wear the same uniform as the men.
But they also have the freedom to choose any number of other variations on wearing tartan, and I say vive la différence!
I like the variety of ways in which women wear tartan – longer skirts, shorter skirts, trousers, plaids, sashes, et cetera, et cetera.
One member (sorry, I forget who it was) made the point that it helps for a guy in a kilt not to be confused with the girls
I have no problem with women wearing sporrans (when not in band uniform), but it might be preferable for them to wear something that can be distinguished from a man’s sporran. Angie, I like your idea of a pink sporran (as long as it doesn’t shout at the tartan!).

And in closing, Father Bill’s remark would have raised eyebrows in my country too. But it was an honest mistake, and we won’t send him to Coventry for it.
    Regards,
    Mike

The women I know who wear kilts wouldn't take very kindly to the suggestion that they wear a pink sporran, and have absolutely no problem being distinguishable from the guys. Just sayin' is all.

I have bought my wife a kilt, (though it may be better described as a tartan rear pleated skirt as it has a LHS fringe although I did not request it), but would not for a minute think of getting her a sporran. If she wanted to discard her handbag, then I think a side worn bum bag or pouch would be much more acceptable. Having said that, she has never asked and whilst I may express a preference, as she does with me, I'd never attempt to dictate what she could or could not wear. It would likely be counter productive.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

    2. in the article, Ann Stewart specifically noted that "kilts" were primarily for men, but that some women did wear them and she, herself owned one and loved it.

If ANN STEWART owns and wears a kilt, I think that kind of shutters the argument for me.

Interestingly e nough, my opinion on this subject has changed over the years. If you read the X-Kilt manual, you'll note a comment about ladies leaving the kilt for the menfolk. At this point, though, I don't much care one way or another. Make it, wear it.... what, like I'm going to stop you, somehow? sheesh.
I've met Mrs. Stewart several times. She made my best kilt. I agree with Alan - her authority on the matter is as great as anyone's.

Probably not a good idea. With all the rabble so concerned about TCHD, it might confuse people, since pink was traditionally a boys', rather than a girls' colour.

Blue being for boys and pink for girls is a relatively recent phenomenon -- think mid-20th century.

The portrait of 'the blue boy' caused a sensation for his wearing of the 'wrong' colour.

I do have 'a bag on a strap' which is handy for keeping my bus pass within reach, worn on the hip - I have swivelled it around to centre front in high winds - out of necessity in the strong blustery winds we get along the main road here. It runs West to East along the ridge and the South Westerlies are a problem as they swirl along between buildings and around each junction.

The bag used to have an entirely useless bow on the front - it now has a handy pocket with a strap and button closure made from the same fabric - which is rather faded blue denim.

Some women just don't 'do' pink.

For the record, Angie was the one who expressed an interest in a pink sporran. I liked it for her (with reservations), but I would hardly make it a principle of women’s kiltwear.

Mike Oeltte, I would never disrespect the kilt, I know in some people's eyes, women shouldn't wear them, .. I go for cute, my husband wanted me to wear a skirt and when I saw a woman wearing hers she inspired me, ever since then I have been getting kilts.. 5th one .. getting 2 more forChristmas.. I like PINK alot I don't wear it often because when I do, I get it dirty lol. So when I get the Pink Sporran I can wear it.. without the fear of getting it dirty.. I would do my best not to take away from my kilts... I have to be me lol..my picture next to my name I'm wearing my Red Sporran.. I wear it w my kilts that have red in them or my dark shadow island on black tartan( black goes w every thing ) .I also think a light pink goes with alot too.......Angie.. I APPRECIATE what u said etc.

ratspike, I think a woman or a man can wear what ever they would like, that includes their kilts .. I have a black rabbit sporran and a red dyed sporran..I will be getting a light pink sporran too. I just like pink, its my favorite color .. so I will be wearing it.. not to state that I am a female, nothing like that.. just because I like pink alot .. I would wear pink shirts often but I can't because I get them dirty lol..So that is the only reason why I would wear a pink sporran.. I have a twin sis and she likes green if she wanted a green sporran or what ever she can wear it....To me its about a person preference and style not if they r female or male If someone male or female has a pink sporran w purple tassels I would be like how cool is that .... Angie..
