Steve nailed it. Regardless of how white hose may have previously been accepted as a norm for wearing with the kilt, the modern hire company fashion trend has utterly turned it into a meme that we would do well to avoid.

I did like this one

but wasn't so keen on the white socks... but liked the kilt. I bought a kilt like this and to my horror there was a large silver thistle that had been stuck (some sort of iron-on thing) on the pleats at the back

The fancy knit hose that Steve posted - they aren't "white" but a natural wool hue. Quite nice and beautifully crafted. sign me up for pair of those for special occasions. (ed, after reading Fr Bill below) On second thought, they'd also look good with my PV and hiking boots when I'm out to the market and such, kinda fit in with the natural and artisan.
I don't think I'd wear my kilt as often as I do If I relied on a google search of images - some interesting stuff there Steve. It's good thing that I was pointed toward Xmarks or I'd likely never have known that the kilt is as flexible for wear as any trousers - well almost - and that colour is a good thing. Its why I've made of habit of including Xmarks in the conversation when anyone asks me about my kilt and what its like to wear.
White socks; fill you boots - literally - if you wish. From my perspective the more variety the better, not unlike my usual sock drawer.

Well, as I said recently elsewhere, I don't own them or even cream or "natural" ones. Don't like them, wouldn't wear them, am not impressed by them,
...but it's not illegal. Just not the height of good taste.

rabble,
Be it as it may, it is still a personal choice on what to wear. Some pick the hose or flashes that will bring out a distinctive line in the tartan. No matter what color it is, white, black, blue, green or even yellow. Yes rental companies tend to use white hose for the fact that they are deemed a one time use item and to most white goes with everything. Making it cheaper to keep them on hand, but why demonize a color of hose. That is almost like saying why wear a clan badge if you are wearing the tartan.
It comes down to personal preference, Now I am not one large amounts of clan items on an outfit or having the same deign all over. But it is you choice no matter what one says. Not everyone can afford a 16oz 8yd wool kilt, some can only afford a PV kilt that may or may not be 8yd. Some prefer to rent since they only wear it once every few years. Lets try to keep in mind not to give the perception of "rules that must be followed" when most is an expression of yourself and your heritage. No matter what you wear do so with honor and pride, show respect to the national dress and be yourself.

Very well said jumper .......I'm sure the old ones who wore highland gear and are the ones that the tradition starts with, didn't fret over what colour their stockings were, ...I'm sure some just felt blessed they had stockings

Wearing of white kilt hose? No its not illegal. Yes, its not the height of good taste, from some points of view.
There in lies the problem! Who is to say what is and what isn't good taste? Ask a hundred random people what good taste is, you will get a hundred different answers. Let us narrow this down a tad.
Ask a hundred people on this website what good taste is, regarding kilt attire and perhaps you might get three or four groups appear, each within that particular group will have a fairly broad agreement on what good taste is.
Ask a hundred lowland Scots the same question and I venture to suggest most would not see too much of a problem with white hose.
Ask a group of traditional kilt wearing Highland Scots then probably most would not view the "hire shop white hose" as an example of good taste.
Ask the rest of the kilt wearing world(EXCLUDING pipe bands) then most, not all, probably don't know, don't care, or are happy with white hose. I think Steve has illuminated well, the reason for this train of thought in post 69.
Does any of this really matter? Well, when compared to the dreadful things going on, on this planet then, no it doesn't and nor should it.
Does it matter if you want to, or not, show yourself off to best advantage with your kilt if you wear white kilt hose? Well, if tradition and experience is worth anything to you, then clearly the traditional kilt wearing Highland Scot is worth listening to and no one can deny them their right of an opinion(unspoken usually!) on this matter. After that-------------------------------- its up to you!

Definitely not, which is why I never really considered buying white hose to wear with my kilt.

I agree. Even worse, in many places jeans are the "good clothes" now. Sad. The way to combat this trend is not to go along with it.
