I have a 12 year old son and a 14 year old daughter who have been taught from an early age what is and is not acceptable behavior. Recently my son told me that he had held a door open for an elderly woman who had both hands full of grocery bags and that she had said "My, what a gentleman. Thank you". He then complained that the people who were behind her just walked by as he held the door as if he were a door man. I told him he should have just let the door close and if they get hit by the door, too bad but that would just bring him down to their level. A couple of days later it was my turn to be the "door man" and as the person walked through the door without even aknowledging me, I told him "you're welcome" to which he responded "I didn't say thank you". I told him "I know, but you're welcome anyway". Then let the door close before someone else came along. The guy just walked away all upset. My son asked what his problem was, I told him I didn't know but that common courtesy isn't as common as it used to be and that I was glad he wasn't like that.
