Question Can a Marine "Leatherneck" tartan be worn with the "dress blue" uniform?

i go to Recruit Training in a few weeks. My MOS is music and while I'm a pianist, I'm a bagpiper and the band master was really excited about the pipes. I just read that the Leatherneck is NOT "official" thus cannot be worn with the dress blues, though I've heard of guys wearing cammy kilt with the field uniform. It would be really cool wearing the kilt with my dress blues when I'm piping for the Corps.

the quick answer would be that you can not wear the leather neck tartan or any kilt with the dress uniform while representing the Corp. or any branch of the military. Uniform requirements are very strict. However, talk to the band master show him/her a picture of the tartan and you can never tell what might happen.

The band master said it sounds like an awesome idea, but of course it'll have to be researched, maybe a few people bribed.

I can tell you this much. Though not sure of the official name, I believe it is the Leatherneck Pipe and Drum Corps, their uniform is a dress blue jacket cut for a kilt, and a dress blue kilt with the blood stripe down the leg; I presume that the same rules would apply with the wearing of the blood stripe-must be an NCO. See link... http://www.leatherneckpipeband.com/photos.html

I just recalled that the Leathernecks are not a currently serving band; I think they are all former serving Marines.

There is a Marine Pipers website: http://www.marinepipers.com/ but it appears to be dormant right now. You might like to try signing up to their network and see what happens.

By the way, I forgot to say earlier...Good luck with boot camp! Just remember that you will get through it, no matter how tough it is.

The key here is don't wear the Blues blouse you get fitted in boot camp. If you get approval to wear a kilt in Uniform, get a seperate blouse tailored to work with a kilt. Not cheap if they make you pay for it but if the Corps will flip the bill jump at the offer.

    Welcome from Houston, TX.

Here's the answer to your question: no.

    http://www.marcorsyscom.usmc.mil/sit...ons%20FAQs.asp.

"Kilts are not part of the Marine Corps uniform inventory and may not be worn with any Marine Corps uniform item."

And, though you may have heard that cammie kilts were worn in uniform, they weren't.

Good luck in boot camp. Just keep pushing and you'll find that it's easier than you thought it was going to be. Just stay mentally strong and know that it will all end eventually.
