A wonderful ebay find
Now here is a deal. This looks like a beautiful Argyll jacket and 5 button vest -- and it breaks my heart that it is a size too small for me, or else I wouldn't be telling a soul about it. So if you are a slim young man like I used to be, and if you are looking for a jacket, bid. It is a steal at GBP 1.70.

If you end up wearing if with pride.... don't forget the pictures

Interesting, indeed. I am now a bidder (but won't go very high). It might be a bit snug on me now but I've been good about a weight loss goal, having lost 35 pounds in the last 13 months. My goal is to get back into a 38 and I'm not far away.
What might you consider a good price?

I think the jacket is mislabeled, it is not a Price Charlie. It has no tails and the waistcoat is wrong. As an Argyll jacket it looks like a good buy.

Cck, I think you are correct; not a PC, but still a darn good deal.
Couper, good luck...and don't the pictures if you win.

It is an older Argyll jacket, and is probably made from melton wool instead of barathea, with sewn-on braid for piping; nice little details that you don't see much these days.
Also the sleeves appear to have either been made shorter, or the skirt of the jacket falls a bit lower than most of the ones we see today, where the cuffs fall quite a bit below the skirt of the jacket. It was probably tailkor made for whoever originally owned it.

Regardless of "style" - which I am just beginning to understand, I like the appearance. Black looks good with white hair.
I'm sure it will go up from the current bid. Sooo, shipping to the US aside, what would you consider a good price?

If it were me, I would not want to go over £50. Savvy Row have a reputation on eBay for selling quality products, but can be quite unknowledgeable about what they are selling. They are quite good on period garments, but anything of an 'ethnic' or regional style and they soon find themselves out of their depth. I once bought a tweed Argyle jacket (made in the 80s) from them which they described as a 'De-Mob' jacket (1945/46/47) because it had a red and yellow over-check.
Although they call themselves 'Savvy Row', they are playing on the fact that the well known street of tailors is called Saville Row. They just happen to be located 500 miles away!
I am quite happy with the purchase I made from them.
Regards
Chas

I wish they made sharp looking jackets like Argylls and Prince Charlies for ladies!

I have always thought that an Argyle looks particularly fine on a lady. Rather like a large Bolero jacket.

I really like the looks of this jacket. And it's my size too, hmm...
What's weird is that the button choice and the sewn-on braid accents at the pockets give it a more dressy look, as if it would be most appropriate with black tie. But the high-buttoned waistcoat doesn't really lend itself to black tie. I'm still a dunce at all the different levels of fancy dress; what would you guys say this jacket/waistcoat combo fits best with? Just "evening wear" but not "black tie"?
Sorry for the slight threadjack, but...

I don't know who it is that you are referring to when you say "they", but there are plenty of companies out there who offer jackets in similar styles for women (and without even having to go to Highland style vendors to find them). Not necessarily the Prince Charlie style, since that is a pretty solidly masculine sort of jacket, but jackets similar to the Argyll style are quite common for ladies. Here are some examples that Kyle posted a while back in a thread about the Argyllshire Gathering and Oban Games, where I noticed a number of jackets on the ladies which were quite stylish. Are these jackets kind of what you were looking for?

But if you want an "actual" Argyll jacket cut for a woman, you might ask around with some of the pipe bands. Often times, there are women in the pipe bands who have to wear Argyll jackets just like the men when in uniform, and they must be finding them somewhere. I've seen some female pipers who were wearing Argyll jackets that looked very much like they had been tailored to a woman's shape.
