Inexpensive 16oz wool tartan
Marton Mills has inexpensive 16oz wool tartan on sale here: http://martonmills.com/sale.htm
The copy says not suitable for kilts due to selvedge. I phoned and talked to someone in their sales department, and was told the selvedge on these sale items is less than perfect, I took this to mean the listed tartans are factory seconds. The rep said if a kilt were made of the sale tartan it would probably have to be hemmed. For those concerned about cost, and not offended by hemmed kilts, the sale tartan might be the way to go, if you like the patterns.
Originally I filled out the contact form on the Marton Millis web site. There was no reply. Rocky at USAKilts advised phoning, which I did. The rep said to send an email to inquirey@martonmills.co.uk and put Order in the subject line to get further details. She said there is a secure way to place an order using a credit card. After talking to the rep early this morning Kansas time I sent the order email. No reply yet. I thought there might be, if they were on top of things, but no. It's beyond COB in England now, so I'll have to wait and see what happens.
Anyway, for the impecunious or stingy the sale tartan may be of interest.
ETA: Just got an email saying my email to Marton Mills is undeliverable, reason rejected by recipient. Probably best to phone Marton Mills and ask for detailed response by phone rather than fooling with email. Their way of handling email requests, either way I've tried, doesn't seem to work well.
