Vintage store jackpot
I was shopping in Kensington market last week and came upon a Barbour jacket and a nice pair of Cole Hahn shoes. The clerk remembered me and asked if I was that guy that was into kilts. Once my identity was confirmed, he called downstairs and the owner brought up an 8 yard wool kilt in what I think is House of Edgar MacDonald of Clanranald Ancient.
I already had Clanranald Modern tartan kilts but I always admired the look of the ancient as well. When I looked the kilt over, it was obvious that it was quite old. The lining was rotting and the straps were showing their age but the wool was sound. There wasn't a moth hole on it.
He wanted $100 for the kilt, $100 for the Barbour Durham waxed cotton jacket and $65 for the shoes.
I haggled and so he sold me all three for $200 CAD taxes included.
The kilt was a bit big on me around the waist, but nothing too drastic and the length was perfect. Since I knew I'd be getting the linen canvas lining replaced anyway, I figured I'd get the buckles and straps moved at the same time.
I took the kilt to Heather at William Glen & Son (formerly Cairngorum Scottish Imports) and for $125 plus taxes, I got the kilt basted, cleaned, pressed, a new modern canvas and lining and the buckles and straps moved to fit me correctly.
I think she did a fantastic job and so for around $200 (hard to know how much the kilt actually cost as part of the package deal at the vintage shop) I got a like new kilt that fits me very well and has some room to grow if I exercise less and eat more over the years.
Here are some photos of the finished kilt.

I snapped this before I finished removing all of the basting thread.

I forgot to mention that the kilt had a clanranald bonnet badge pinned to it like a kilt pin so that was a nice bonus.

Were you at Courage My Love by chance? The last time I was in there they had a horsehair sporran, unfortunately it did not have a pouch.
