Can I dye this Jacket black???
I got this off eBay tonight....nice pure wool Prince Charlie, it was the right size, a good price but just not quite the right colour. I figure if I could dye it black it would tick all the boxes. So my question is, how hard would it be to dye this Charlie black? Any one ever tried it? Wool normally dyes well I think so i'm curious if a couple of packets of black dylon hand dye would be a simple fix or a road to ruin?

I had a pair of all wool hose in a color between Lovat Blue and Lovat Green that I wanted to dye black a couple months ago. I used Dylon and followed the directions carefully. They came out a beautiful dark teal color that I really like, but they weren't remotely close to being black. YMMV, but I wouldn't get your hopes up.

I think that you'll probably end up with a darker hue of the existing colour, but are not likely to get the black that you are probably looking for. If the price was very good on the jacket, it would be worth trying to see what comes of it.

If you dye it, it definitely won't be black but a combination of the two colours. I think the colour is great just the way it is

You might end up with a colour very close to Archer Green, the very dark green used in Highland military doublets. It is often mistaken for black indoors, or in poor light.
People often think the military Glengarries and Doublets are black: they are blue and green respectively.

Why dye?
There are a lot of black PCs out there so unless you really need a black PC, this one might do very well as is. I had my PC made
from a navy blue material with black facings and I am quite happy I did since it remains formal yet is distinctly different.
You could also add a black waistcoat to tone down the colour of you want.
So so for what it is worth, I think you have a made a nice acquisition.

Cheers guys....maybe I should wait until it arrives and try it out with a dinner shirt and black tie and see how it looks with my kilt. I had not considered the option of a black waistcoat maybe that would tone it down. On some of the other eBay photos it looks much darker green than on the photo i posted here so it may almost pass for black at a evening meal event in dim light.

As mistress of a dyeing trade, I have always found it impossible to turn anything a true black when it has already been coloured - as though most of the colour holding parking slots are already taken.
