Sat around Inverary on a bench at the street. Waited for the light [to improve] to take a picture. Duke drove in and around the church, double parked, brought something, drove by to Castle and flashes his lights at me.
●Main St West (Camera didn't sound good) [In fact, it had failed mechanically. I didn't know it]
●Main St South, MacKenzies Land (LF) Arkland (LR)
Relief Land (RR) Black Land (L?)
Bought tie for Grandpa Campbell
●White Stone Pillars mark the old Inverary Castle built by Colin 1st Earl in early 15th Century
Sat around town and took pictures. Talked to John of England, walked up Glen Aray and saw good view of Castle from Quarry. Went to Castle and took pic of old site of Inverary Castle, then walked up Glen Aray. Went back and bought some fancy cakes. Spent evening at hostel. People in hostel. Swiss girlfriend Torridon, 2 girls, Old Couple (Gladys and Allan Campbell) from Loch Lochy, John, (2 other girls and 9 boys, for chess [class? unclear] Lochgilphead). Read for a while.
Weather fine Monday, Tues-Fri Wind from SE. Very black clouds, intermittent showers all week.

£2.30 [Oban Youth Hostel]

£16.95 quaich
£1.95 badge
Laundrette opens 9:00-4:15 (soap?) Mon [unclear] [I'm sure I desperately needed to wash my clothes. But this was Saturday.]
Up this morning, easy duty [as mentioned before, everyone was assigned a job in the morning as part of payment for staying]. John and Betty off ASAP. Boys gone ½9. Went to Castle. Rain morning. Bought Quaich and Blazer badge [both with the Campbell Clan Crest]. Tried for lift w/ Oban sign. Got a ride with 2 girls I hadn't seen before in to hostel. They took me right to Oban. Left stuff at hostel and walked around window shopping.
Celtic Cross £15 Iona Jewelry
Went to library for a while. Pack frame finally broke. Will have to try to fix Monday. Evening talked to Boy from Edinburgh, Guy from Alaska, Girl ex from Rochester NY, (now California), Australia, Vancouver.
[That was the last morning of the season for the Inverary hostel. I still have the quaich and blazer badge. I never wore the badge, but the quaich sits on the piano.]

Easy day. Shower (free, meter broken)
Walked around Oban and didn't do much. Walked back and forth. Met Mull man w/some Gaelic a couple of times. [unclear] said used to be huge carriages in Oban bringing in tourists. Mostly wanted out of the breeze. Sun shone in the morning. Dull afternoon, later rain. Almost sold trainers [they were too small], but warden got after me for saying see warden [?? What did I mean?] Dull evening.
Tomorrow wash clothes. Fix [backpack] frame. Walk down Sound of Kerrera?

Oban
Washed clothes [and dried] fast enough to get back and change before the hostel closed. Took pack to Ironmongers, Shoe repair, Garage (Repair) Ironmongers, the Oban Engin, bless their hearts. Manager NIrish. No charge (send Christmas card). Checked airfares. Not promising. Check anytime w/ In'ness Bank. Afternoon walked along Kerrera Sound, not all way to fort. Huge cliffs. Skipped Pulpit Rock. An Comunn Gaidhealach [shop] in time to be out of the rain. Talked to street cleaner who comes from Kerrera. Man in An Comunn from N Uist (Loch Maddy). Got picture from Oban Times, paid for 5x7, the rest were free. [Pictures from the Clan Campbell Gathering] Ordered one of march [to the Inverary Games]. Tea then read in library. Evening quiet. Few people.
Weather - some sun, wind SW-W. Warm.
[My backpack broke at the bottom from being set down with all the weight (sleeping bag, clothes, food, pipe case). I got a pair of stainless steel tubes and small nuts and bolts at the Ironmongers. Oban Engineering, once they understood my problem, let me use a hand drill and hand tools. No problems. They gave me the tools and asked "Do you know what you're doing?" "Yes" and so they turned me loose. I can't imagine that would happen today. With some trepidation I broke the other side, although it was also cracking, then slid the tubes over the broken frame tubes, then drilled through and bolted them in place. Worked great, and I used that pack backpacking until my sons were out of Scouts a few years ago.]
