XMarks in Europe - The Social Side

When I first joined this site twenty years ago I was Secretary and Treasurer of my local Highland Games (unfortunately no longer held) and I already knew quite a few people active in Scotland's Highland Games circuit, some of whom were also members here. Through my Highland Games and Clan Society contacts I have also attended Games in England, Canada and USA, and through contact made with fellow kilt wearers through this forum I have attended kilted gatherings in England, Ireland and Germany, also hosted a weekend long gathering in Scotland. Pre-covid there were also Burns Suppers here in the south of Scotland which I would attend, plus I would also meet up with visitors to Scotland from Canada and USA a few times per year.
All this seems to have been lost since the pandemic, sadly some of the friends I made through this forum have passed on, but on the positive side we have gained a significant number of new members as I am seeing hitherto unfamiliar names now posting regularly.
I live just a short walk from the House of Cheviot factory here in Hawick where kilt hose are produced, eleven miles from Lochcarron at Selkirk, fifty-five miles from Edinburgh, and eighty-five miles from Glasgow, where I'm hoping to attend the World Pipe Band Championships during August.
Anyone visiting lowland or southern Scotland from anywhere, feel free to send me a personal message and perhaps we can arrange to meet up while you are here, as it is always nice to add a name and a face to the user name.

Thanks SO much for the invitation. It won't happen THIS summer, but perhaps summer of 2027. A tour of Lochcarron Mills was one of the real highlights of our (my sister, son, and my) 10 days in Scotland summer of 2023, but I'll keep in mind your offer and perhaps you might offer some suggestions that the "get on the bus" tour operators pay little attention to. I've learned quite a bit during the year or so I've been reading here but know I'm still very much at the shallow end of the pool…

Well done Alex! What a great idea of reviving kilted meet-ups with those from outwith these shores and also not forgetting those from different parts of the UK too. I think we have met up a couple of times and I have met more than a few from further afield too. Covid is, I think, well behind us now, so come on chaps if you happen to be in the Fort William area then why not give me a shout on this website. I am afraid that in the past a meet was not always possible due to unforeseen circumstances and I regret that, but do please drop me a line and let's see if a meet can be arranged.

I'll keep it in mind, but can't travel at the moment due to health issues. Which is beyond frustrating as my side hustle for the last 6 or 7 years is bringing Estonia groups over to Scotland and I generally travel to and from Manchester to visit my folks when I am over.
