The Philosophy and Rules of X Marks

Background
This web site began in 2004 as a place where one man could post amusing photos of some of the amusing ways some people dress at Highland Games. These photos began a long series known as “The do’s and dont's of how to wear the Kilt.” Today X Marks is the world’s largest and most active community sharing a love for this thing we call The Kilt.

Mission Statement

This site is a place where our members can enjoy the company of all other fellow kilt wearers. We wish to provide a place where those who choose to wear the kilt can find friendship, information, guidance, advice, and share their kilt experiences with others.

This is a Kilt Forum. Our members come here to learn about, discuss and share a love for the kilt. This is not a general Scottish culture forum nor is it a general highland wear forum, just as it is not an alternative men's fashion forum. We keep our focus on the kilt. It is what brings us here and what makes this forum unique in the world.

As we all wish to have access to the kilts and accessories offered by various manufacturers and retailers we accept a select few who are trusted and known to provide quality, value and service, to present their products to our members.

Our guiding principles will always be;

“We agree to conduct ourselves as the Ladies and Gentlemen of X Marks.” This site has always been a place where our members treat each other in a polite and respectful, open and honest manner at all times.

"We understand that as a kilt specific forum our chosen subject of discussion is not the complete spectrum of life." Over the years we have found certain subjects always seem to result in discord. Therefore, we respectfully ask our members to remember that this is a kilt forum and to leave their Politics, Religion and Weapons at the door.

“We assume and expect our members to act as responsible adults”. Adults don't need to be forced to follow rules. They have developed a sense of right and wrong. They know when a subject is appropriate or not. We expect our members to take responsibility for their own actions and the consequences for those actions.

“To keep this forum an enjoyable and informative place we rely on a Member Driven Moderation Policy”. Throughout the forum, at the bottom of every post, personal or visitor message are small triangular icons. If you hover your pointer over this icon the words "Raise a Flag aganst this Post" will appear. Clicking on this icon is the easiest and surest way of bringing something to the attention of the Forum Moderators about any issue you see on the forum. Although called "Flagging a Post" we would like our members to consider this as our "Open Door" to contact our staff about any issue, for any reason. The staff can assist if you made a typo in a thread title or if you would like a post or thread moved to another section of the forum.
The Flag a Post button may also be used if the Original Poster (OP) wishes to have a thread closed. The OP is considered the owner of the threads they start and may request to have it edited, moved, or closed at any time.
We have Moderators to oversee the operation of forum but they are not forum cops. The 'Flag a Post' feature is our way for our member to bring an issue to the attention of the Forum Moderators. By 'raising a flag' on any issue that they feel needs to be addressed, our members are assuming the responsibility for governing themselves.

By joining us on this forum you have agreed to adhere to our guiding principals and to abide by these rules and policies.

Rule #1
– Attacks from Hackers, Spammers and those using the membership resources of this forum as a pool to fish for prospects, or for any other purpose, will not be tolerated.
No Spam, not today, tomorrow, ever.

Rule #2
–-We believe in fostering polite discussion. Posts which provoke quarrels, escalate contention, or are hostile or insulting, are subject to removal.

Rule #3 (edited 18 Oct 2016)
– Pornography, nudity, and/or sexually explicit material of any kind, or embedded links to such material, have no place on this forum. Posts that include or imply crude, vulgar, foul or offensive language, are not acceptable.

Rule #4 (edited 23 Mar 2017)
- A person has a right to a reasonable expectation to privacy and respect. Posts or photos which invade someone's privacy are subject to removal. Posts or photos which defame, mock, ridicule, or which voice or promote racism, prejudice or bigotry of any kind are subject to removal.

Rule #5
- Discussions on the topics of religion and politics most often result in conflict between members. Posts which quote historical facts or historical events are acceptable. Discussions of the rightness or wrongness of, espousing one over another, perceptions of, or personal belief in, a religion or political system are not acceptable. Quite simply, check your religion and politics at the door before entering.

Rule #6
- This forum has a Personal Message(PM) function. This is for the express purpose of transmitting personal information such as real names, addresses or other sensitive information. This is not a Private Message system as nothing transmitted electronically is ever completely private. Any flagged use of the Personal Message function, or Social Groups function, or attempting to circumvent our rules must be treated the same as any post on the open forum.

Rule #7
- Too often ‘farewell messages’ are bitter and full of disappointment. Farewell messages will be deleted.

Rule #8
– We expect our members to take responsibility for their own actions. Claiming ‘personal preference’, ‘personal opinion’ or "I was provoked" is an excuse not a defense. What you should do when provoked is raise a flag against the escalation under Rule #2.

Rule #9
– This forum is not the place for the discussion of cross-dressing.

Rule #10 (amended 26 May, 2016)
- There is to be no use of this forum to solicit money from your fellow members. This includes direct requests, links to 3rd parties, or requests for sponsorship or donations. (This rule does not apply to items listed in "For Sale")

Rule #11 (amended 7 May, 2015)
- This Forum limits any discussion, photos or links to weapons to our "Weapons as Kilt Accessories" section. Specific definitions of what may and may not be posted will be found as a notice in that section. To go directly to the Weapons section, please click here

Rule #12
- Off Topic Threads & Posts -
a) The topic of discussion on X Marks is the kilt. Threads or posts not related to the kilt are restricted to either the Events or Community forum sections.
b) Posts to existing threads must keep to the topic set by the Original Poster (OP). Posts which take a thread off the original topic may be removed.
