Found some socks...
...okay, I bought three more of these online this morning and realized that I should share this.
Bridgedale Blaxnit over the knee socks at Sierra Trading Post: $4.95 US a copy with a $6.00 shipping charge. Of particular interest to me were the Olive and Olive Heather colors...the Olive is almost a charcoal and really doesn't (to my eye) have very much green in it and the Olive Heather is a middle-grey which, again, seems more neutral than green. They have a cinnamon red and a yellow available as of this writing and an "ecru" available under another heading. Go to their website and search by brand name for Bridgedale.
Not to plug a business unnecessarily...I hope that my relaying this info doesn't violate any of Xmarks covenants, but they're decently heavy socks and the price is what you'd pay for soccer socks at the sporting goods shop.

Auld_Argonian,
Do you have any of these yet? How thick/warm are they? They look like they might be good for winter or cooler weather, but not sure about summer time usage. Probably going to get some anyway. The only other ones I have found were at Carson Pirie Scott which are just extra long dress socks, but only in black. At least they are a wool blend.
And for anybody who wants to see these, here are the links:

Howdy
I found some socks on JasTownsend & Son, Inc. This site is a 18 century reproduction site for reniactors so do not be alarmed when you get there.
They call them stockigs ..100% cotton stockings the weight of an athletic sock. Over-the-knee length. Unstretched length is 25 1/2 inches from the heel to the top of the stocking. Available in Forest Green, Black, Off-white, Charcoal Gray, Maroon, White, Dark Brown and Navy. Go with the heavy cotton ones..
They also have wool ones of a medium weight. Long over-the-knee socks are 23 inches unstretched from the heel to the top of the stocking. 90% wool 10% acrylic. Gray, Off-white, Navy ,Dark Green ,or Dark Brown.
I think the fit well and go great with a kilt
Price for cotton is $8 & $20 for the wool shipping is $7 unless you want overnight
the web site is www.jastown.com

Aye Chicago,
Doesn't violate any rules of the board to share great sources of goodies. That's the beauty of the board. We share finds exactly like this.
Thank you!
Off to shop.
