Solid Color Family "Tartans"...??
Don't mean to be silly or stupid here...just asking.
If a person's last name was Black, Brown, Green, White, or another color, would it be sorta maybe considered a "family tartan" to wear a solid color kilt whose color matched the family name.
Mr. White in a white kilt, Mr. Green in a green kilt, Mr. Black in a black kilt, Mr. Brown in a brown kilt....?
What say those with those, or other color, last names?

Well... I wear a Kakhi kilt that is about the same color as the clay I work with, and my last name is supposed to mean one who works with pottery... It's a stretch, but there you go.
I hope there is nothing like what you're saying going on... I wear solid and non-true clan tartan kilts because I don't have much of a connection to any clans. It's already hard enough to deal with that than to have the solid color kilts snached away too.

Not to sound rude, but "tartan" is made up of at least two colours and is twill woven where the weft threads go over two and under two of the warp. You may have a solid colour kilt, but you can't have a solid colour tartan.

Oh, thank goodness... I was worried that I would have to get rid of my solid colors and go only with "bag" set tartans and fashion tartans.
Wait! That leaves the non-tartan tweeds, like brown tweed, or gray tweed...
Gray Granite isn't a clan tartan I hope... I thought that would be the perfect tartan for me...
I'm just joking around with you Ron.

That sounds like the description for the SWK "Shadow Tartan" kilt...

The Ben Dubh et al Tartans are black on black. Some are woven with the twist of the Warp threads left handed and the Weft threads right handed, and some start with the Warp white & Weft black then re-dyed black.
Legal Tartans by definition.

I will have to look up "Ben Dubh," but I don't think the SWK black shadow tartan is a family or clan tartan... Kind of generic, along with the green and saffron shadow tartans. I have heard of solid color kilts or belted plaids in paintings from long ago, but I don't remember that they were the clan color or anything like that.
I have read in several threads that there are "true" clan tartans that are accepted by the clan chief, and the others are just... fashion tartans. I'm kind of hoping that the fashion tartans are safe to wear without causing... issues with the clan members.
