    New kilts at SWK

    Hey y'all
Check out the two new Standards at SWK. A Gordon and a MacKenzie. Way cool! I'll have to start saving again.

Yes I saw that right after I bought my Gordon in Economy. And the standard is pleated to stripe, how am I going to explain another new kilt in a tartan I already have so soon. Decisions decisions, and I have ordered a sporran from beserk bishop that will hopefully be done and on its way soon so I can't spend any of that money on a new kilt.

I like both of those, but I want the Gordon from WPG for winter wear. I still can't decide on what to get from SWK- Saffron, Weathered McKenzie or Nightstalker.

I really like SWK. You can get some seriously awesome stuff there, but they never have my size in the economy or thrifty kilts. I guess there aren't alot of smaller guys who wear kilts.

Thanks for the heads-up! I now have more things to add to the wish list.

When in doubt about any Stillwater product, email the sales@ address on the "Contact us" page, and you will get a swift and friendly reply from Jerry. I have had a reply from Jerry on a Saturday night, sent in less than 10 minutes. It took longer that that to get through my email gateways to my in-box. Talk about your customer service!

I'm not positive of the Economy model's status, but I understood that it was being phased out in favor of the Thrifty. The sizes available seem to be just what was left... Anyway my guess is that the price point of the Economy and Thrifty are too close, and the product so similar, that they've concentrated on the Thrifty. The difference is primarily
    • The economy has straps, the thrifty has hook-and-loop.
    • The economy has a reverse pleat at the under-apron

If you favor an upgrade, the Standard model is a good one to aim for. It has a deeper reverse pleat and "first pleat" by the apron, in other words very traditional construction.

My observations (below) about sizes stem from being in the range (32-34 waist) that sells out first! You want to be ready to buy when the new kilts come in, but Jerry will give you some idea of what to expect and when, if he possibly can. Sometimes the supply chain seems a little unpredictable, but the new offerings are up in all sizes! Plus if you tell Jerry what you want, he's better able to supply it! Sometimes he seems to be reading our minds, and I still don't know how he ships so quickly; but he's human, too; he's just more superhero-like than most of us.

The black Stewart has been added to the line since the Thrifty model came along. That would be an enticing addition to the heavyweight line, too; but it has not been offered there: just Standard and Thrifty, if I recall correctly.

Minnow: don't know what your size in Thrifty would be, but the popular Small and Medium are available right now in the 2 newest offerings, MacKenzie and Black Shadow.

In the Standard and wool, the first to sell out usually seem to be the 34-38, followed by the 32, 40, and on up. If you're in those sizes, it pays to be watching when SWK resupplies; IMHO it would also pay to let Jerry know what you would like to see, in what sizes. I took my own advice and asked about the heavyweight availability, and Jerry said he expected more by summer. Sure enough, they were there this spring; and I was able to grab the top two on my list (Green Shadow and Black Watch).

If you "never" see your size, you're perhaps a 34? Again, the Standard has the range of sizes in the brand new tartans: Gordon and MacKenzie. Those ought to be really beautiful tartans, if you can afford the upgrade. If not, consider grabbing one in a Thrifty. I love my Thrifty (and my old Economy model, I'll admit )

If you're smaller that a 30, I'd recommend checking with Jerry or someone knowledgeable about an alteration. You can take about 2 inches off the waist without hurting the look of a Stillwater. Over 2 is chancy --- the apron is getting to be too big for the rest of the kilt at that point.

The Standards are also available in the "popular" Black/Royal Stewarts, Nightstalker, Black Watch, and Leatherneck.

The Heavyweight has a good selection in
Black Watch and Green, but the Saffron and Black Shadows did not last long! I haven't seen a Saffron in person, but it is on my wish list. The Black and Green shadow tartans are seriously good-looking kilts, and the Black Watch is just what you'd expect from SWK (amazing value).

I just looked at their web site - how can a kilt be sold for such a low price? I thought when I paid around $100 that was low. Are they good quality? What type of material? Do they have different lengths or are they all the same length? There was one company I would be able to buy a kilt from as they were only one length, and not mine.

    Dale,

I am an unabashed cheerleader for Stillwater. Their kilts are either acrylic or wool. They are machine sewn. They do not have the pleats cut out at the waist like a custom made kilt. You can order custom lengths but it does take time.

That said I really love the value that Stillwater represents. Their products are handsome and sturdy.

I have three heavyweights (wool) and two standards (acylic), plus I ordered a standard for my Father (not to mention a host of accessories). Jerry, like Sport Kilt, USA Kilts, and Freedom Kilts has my trust.

    Cheers
