Davidson?
I own three UK and was looking to get a more traditional kilt, I have been told that (Dean) is a set of davidson. It dose not seem that any of the casual kilt makers carry this tarten, is their some reason that I don't know of?

Greetings, 13 June, 647amMST
I looked in my source, and yes; Dean is indeed a sept name of Clan Davidson. Don't know why your kiltmaking sources would not have it, other than I would think it very difficult to stock a lot of fabric, when it can be had from fabric sources within a few days.
Davidsons and Shaws are fellow members of the great Clan Chattan Confederation, so you could also wear the Clan Chattan tartan as well.

I have a friend who is a Dean and he is looking for a kilt in the Davidson of Tulloch tartan. I don't think the Davidson tartan is a special weave. I'm curious as to who you are looking at when you say casual kiltmaker. If you are looking at kilts that are not wool, then I doubt you will find it. I don't think Marton Mills weaves Poly/Viscose in the Davidson tartan.

A year ago, Sportkilt announced that they were going to offer the Davidson tartan. I don't know if they ever got it. They don't have it listed among their tartan offerings now.

There was a family who called themselves "Dean alias Davidson" on the Mackintosh estates in Petty in the 17C and early 18C. It's based on this family that all of the name of Dean are claimed as a sept of Davidson, although there were Deans in Ayrshire, Aberdeenshire and Perthshire at even earlier dates.
If you can trace yourself back to the Deans of Petty it's interesting that you can quite legitimately claim a connection with and wear the Davidson, Mackintosh and Clan Chattan tartans, but not the Davidson of Tulloch; the Deans had left the Petty lands long before the Tulloch line was accepted as chiefs of Davidson.
If, however, you cannot claim descent from the Deans of Petty, but wish to wear the Davidson tartan, you can also wear the Clan Chattan because of the Davidson membership in the confederation, but wearing the Mackintosh would probably be considered wrong from a "connection" perspective.

Davidson and Davidson of Tulloch are available in Lochcarron's Strome range in a variety of colourways. Any of our kiltmakers here could make a kilt for you in one of those tartans no problem.
I see you are looking for a casual kilt in one of those tartans. What is your budget? I think that will be the determining factor in making a recommendation here.

Our casual kilts are available in the full range of tartans from Lochcarron, House of Edgar, and Strathmore -- which includes several incarnations of the Davidson tartan.

We'd certainly be glad to get you kilted!

both my Davidson kilts had to to be specially woven. for some reason nobody seems to stock them even in Scotland.
contrary to what you are being told about Chattan, you can not wear it. the Chattan tartan is reserved solely for the use of the clan chief and his family (at least that's what it tells me in my Complete Book Of Tartan by Iain Zaczek & Charles Phillips).

With all due respect, the latter is quite incorrect. The Chattan tartan was formerly known as "Mackintosh Chief", but even in those far-off days it was not a reserved tartan.
As for the Davidson tartans, they are readily available today from most Scottish mills. Check the websites for House of Edgar, Strathmore, Lochcarron, DC Dalgleish -- all of those, and others, stock several versions of Davidson and Davidson of Tulloch tartans.

hey, i'm only going by what it says in that book which is supposedly a tartan encyclopedia... and looking in said book the MacKintosh is identical to Chattan except that the blue is changed to light grey/silver.
i got both my Davidsons from Edgar. both had to be woven specially for me.
